We are having some serious weather changes here in Kentucky! From warm to cold and later in the week we will be back to warm again. During these transitional seasons, it’s important to remember our horses and some special care to take! First and foremost, we always recommend to feed ample forage but make sure that horses are receiving an adequately balanced feed concentrate to avoid nutritional deficiencies that may be lost in hay. At Excel Equine we offer 30+ feed options to meet your horses’ individual nutritional requirements.

Secondly, horses are surprisingly more prone to dehydration in cold weather! Feeding an electrolyte supplement like our Toplyte supplement is recommended to ensure horses are receiving proper electrolyte replenishment and are encouraged to drink more water.

Horses may be more prone to digestive upset during weather changes. To avoid digestive stress, feeding a supplement for gut health is highly recommended. Dozens of rodeo horses are dead after their treating veterinarian says they consumed feed that may have been tainted with monensin.

"Much is known about what has happened here that cannot yet be told," the veterinarian said. "But the bottom line on this story is that it’s an important one to tell, so this never happens to anyone else. I will say this: Never buy horse feed from a mill that makes cattle feed. Period. Please quote me on that. Every horse that ate this feed is dead."
