UPDATE: ADOPTED ❤️

Making her debut Saturday at the shelter after being dug up from the underground is this beautiful girl, Rocks! Two of our staff members took this sweetheart into foster when she came into the shelter from an emergency situation several weeks ago. She is the sweetest girl with tons of personality! Her personal favorite thing is her weekly spa treatment (which should include hot stone massages according to her). She requires refreshments after her spa days and hugs for comfort. Rocks makes her presence known by snorting like a pig. She is best friends with the dogs and cats in her foster family, and deserves the best home!

She is fully vaccinated, spayed and around 2 years old. First come, first serve!

Starie is around 11 years old and she adores her mom!
Unfortunately her mother had an unfortunate event and needs to be away from her for a couple of weeks.
We’d love to reunite her with her mom but she’s having a hard time at the shelter.
Would anybody be willing to open up their home until August 1st and let Starie crash with them?

Where the beagle lovers at?!?

Sunshine bear is a timid but sweet little girl. She definitely needs patience because everything is big and scary. Potty training is a work in progress due to her being so timid and scared. She loves to snuggle, and she loves to be wrapped in blankets like a burrito.

A mix of boys and girls, and they’re around 8 weeks which means…PUPPY BREATHE!! Our favorite thing!!
Mom and dad are terrier mixes weighing no more than 30lbs.
They have had their first shots and preventatives and they’re ready to go home with you!!

“Friendship is being there when someone is feeling low, and not being afraid to kick them in the face.” Chezwick (white feet) hung out with Kramer today. Kramer is one of our longest residents at the shelter so he was feeling a little sad and needed some guy time! Both of these boys are available for adoption with no adoption fees! Every once in a while, someone comes into your life that you know will impact it in a positive way, someone you will never forget. "A light in the darkness" is the best way I know how to describe Evelyn, our biggest advocate and one of our very best volunteers, who we lost just a few months back. Evelyn was the kind of person who could make anybody feel special, and loved and she did the same thing to every animal she crossed paths with. Evelyn's sweet husband David has generously sponsored every animal in our care, in Evelyn's name, Evelyn wouldn't have wanted anything more than to see the shelter cleared and every animal placed in a loving home. Sarting tomorrow 9-26-23 and running until every animal who is currently here is adopted, there will be no adoption fees. Pets will still be up to date on vaccines, and you will receive an appointment for spay or neuter at no cost to you. This is going to be a long and heavy post so bear with me!… We here at Animal Services do our very best to keep things light hearted and fun. We schedule regular adoption events and fun things on and off site and do our very best to get all of our animals in to great homes, we spend countless hours updating FB and Instagram posts, getting our animals out for professional photography, amateur photography (like the cute video below 👇), enrichment, adoption events, meet and greets, etc. but the sad truth is, we are a staff of 4 Animal Services employees and our shelter is completely at max capacity. We are at a standstill and we can not continue to help animals in Burke County until we get some of these animals out, our staff will be faced with making hard decisions if we can not get things going in the right direction ASAP! How can you help? ⭐️ ADOPT- obviously the ideal situation is that all of our animals get loving homes, although, we know not everyone is in a position to adopt. Can’t adopt? ⭐️ FOSTER- The 2nd most ideal situation our animals can go to is a loving and temporary foster home with a family who can help us to find their ideal forever home. Can’t foster? ⭐️ VOLUNTEER- we ALWAYS need volunteers to help us with cleaning, feeding, walking, enrichment, and adoption events. Can’t volunteer? ⭐️ SPONSOR- Stop by Animal Services anytime during business hours and choose an animal you’d like to pay the adoption fee for. (Cash or check) this will help families who may want to adopt a shelter pet but might be struggling with adoption fees. Can’t sponsor? ⭐️SHARE- share our Facebook and Instagram posts, help us show the world what wonderful pets we have! Gerald wanted to hop on here and give you guys a shelter update! ♥️ He says: “The shelter is kinda full right now, this is making it really hard for any us to rest and relax!” 😞 He is requesting that anyone who can, please come by the shelter and foster a dog. Even if it’s short term or even just for a weekend. 🙏 This will give the shelter staff a little time to get caught up and find placement for these guys! 💕 For anyone who’s never fostered: Fostering is such a rewarding experience, you get to love on a sweet shelter pet for a bit and assist them in finding their ideal home! 🏡 When you take a dog (even if it’s just for a few days) we learn a lot! You help us to know so much more about their personality and house manners outside of the shelter environment, which is such an important step in getting them into the right FURever home. 😁 If you’d like to try fostering please stop by, call, or send an email. Adopt from Burke County Animal Services

On August 5, 2019, Burke County Animal Services became its own department under the County Manager, separate from Animal Control. Animal Control is still operated under the Burke County Sheriff’s Department and Morganton Public Safety.

We are the county-operated and tax-funded Animal Services Center for Burke County, North Carolina. We receive all stray animals brought in by Animal Control. Our goal is to reunite these animals with their owners. For animals who are not returned to their owners, we aim to have all adoptable animals placed into suitable homes or transferred to rescue groups where they may be adopted.

For owners wishing to rehome their pets, we do accept owner surrenders as space allows. Owners looking to rehome their pets may be asked to schedule an appointment for surrender if space does not allow us to immediately intake their animals. This "managed intake model" allows us to save more lives and find more pets their forever homes.

All cat & kitten adoptions are $90, and include spay/neuter, a 1 year rabies vaccine (if age-appropriate), standard core preventative vaccines (FVRCP), a monthly flea preventative, and dewormer as needed.
