📚 Our BACK TO BASICS SERIES: spaying and neutering

Let's continue our discussion on reproduction.....

SNiP Now shared this very informative post regarding female fertility and reproduction. They wrote:
"We have had a few calls from people worried their cats are in pain as they are exhibiting symptoms of yowling and other unusual behaviors (rubbing all over items). What these individuals are describing is their female cat having heat cycles which can occur in females as young as 4-months of age. Yowling, rubbing, raising the behind up in the air (lordosis reflex), spraying, the desire to go outside and find a mate...are all symptoms that can occur during a female cat's heat cycle. Sometimes females can appear more loving and other times females can have more aggressive tendencies during this cycle."

Remember that spaying a cat will eliminate these behaviors as well as help control the cat population. Please have your cat spayed by 4 months of age!

"The Cat Lady of Helene"
Talking to Kathy was healing. We spoke of the flood and the destruction left behind by Hurricane Helene. She told me, "Most of my neighbors lost their homes. I’m the last person living on this street—neighbors I had for over 20 years are gone. I used to step outside and say good morning to them every day as part of my routine. But now… my routine is different, yet somehow the same."

I asked her what she meant by that. She said, "The day of the flood, I went outside. When the water rose over four feet, I saw cats swimming and climbing the tree in front of my house. There were six of them. I had seen them around my neighbors' homes before, but by then, their homes were gone—swept away by the water. Ten hours later, when the water receded, the cats climbed down, and I lost sight of them. Maybe they went looking for the places they used to call home." Kathy's eyes filled with sadness.

"But the next morning, they came back. And every day since, they visit me. I feed them now. I imagine they don’t understand why their families aren’t here anymore… but I’m here. I became their family. I became The Cat Lady," she said with a smile.

Sometimes, those who arrive unexpectedly become our family—just like you at BeLoved Asheville. Without knowing us, you arrived with a Tiny Home and started repairing our houses. We felt abandoned… and now we feel seen."

Kathy finished with this:
"When we realize we are a vital part of our community, we take on whatever role is needed to help each other—whether it's sharing Tiny Homes or becoming The Cat Lady."

PLEASE don’t let “outside” dogs suffer or even die in these extreme temperatures!!!
Highs in the 30's and lows in the teens are coming!

BRING THEM INSIDE: The best option is to keep all pets indoors. However, if they must stay outside, you must ensure they have adequate protection from the harsh cold. Breeds like Huskies are equipped to handle winter thanks to their thick double coats, which provide insulation. On the other hand, dogs like Pit mixes, with their thinner coats and exposed undersides, are more susceptible to the cold and should either be brought inside or given insulated shelter. Puppies and older, frail, or sick dogs are particularly at risk in cold weather and require additional protection.

PROVIDE SHELTER: When temperatures drop below 45 degrees, having access to an insulated doghouse, garage, or shed can help keep your dog warm. Dogs that are used to living indoors or in milder climates should not be left outside during freezing conditions. Make sure the shelter is readily accessible, as you may not be home when the temperatures plummet.

INSULATE SHELTER: While a plastic or wooden doghouse can shield them from wind, it won't keep them warm without proper insulation. Use straw bedding—not hay—to insulate outdoor shelters. If you’re using straw to insulate a doghouse, it should be packed tightly along the sides and back. The dog should be able to burrow down into the straw for warmth. Bales of straw typically cost $10 or less at local feed stores and can fill 3-4 doghouses.

Dogs MUST have UNFROZEN water. Be sure to check on this several times a day

It’s crucial to get outdoor pets ready for the impending cold snap this week! Highs in the 30's and lows in the teens are coming!

And as a reminder, the shelter, as well as other community organizations, have a food pantry for those in need (while we have donations of food). P

If you are able to help a neighbor in need by donating either food or a dog house, please bring all donations to the shelter. If donating food, remember it must be new(unopened) and in date. Any brand is accepted and large bags of dry food are most helpful. You can have delivered to or bring by the shelter at 430 Bristol Drive, Statesville, NC 28677.
