The kittens are 5 months old today! I can't believe it... they are bigger than momma Fern! For those that missed any previous updates (I know it's been a while) we found loving homes for three of Fern's kittens and we ended up keeping two (Fig & Wisp). "Feral Fern" has miraculously put aside her wild ways (well... mostly - she's still not a fan of Tristan) and she's still the most loving, devoted momma. Can you believe that the two kittens we kept are STILL nursing?! Unreal. It's definitely just a comfort thing for them at this point. She's hardly producing any milk anymore. But she is SO bonded with her babies it's remarkable. The other three babies are absolutely thriving in their new homes which makes me so happy to see. We get regular updates on them and it seems like they all ended up exactly where they belong. Sometimes placements don't quite "fit" for one reason or another but everyone seems to be meshing and it's beyond what I could have hoped for them. The biggest transformation by far has been Fern. Once fierce... she is now a snuggle bug and lets me handle her like it's no big thing.

"Feral" Fern & Figgy. These babies ADORE their momma. Fern has always been beyond devoted despite only being around 6 months of age herself when she showed up pregnant. The kittens are 17 weeks old now and I can't believe it. We found lovely forever homes for three of them and we ended up keeping two. Fig and Wisp will stay here with momma Fern and she doesn't mind one bit. 💕

We lost our sweet Meli girl. 💔 I can't believe she's gone. It was very sudden and completely unexpected. To say Meli was THE BEST GIRL doesn't even begin to cover it. To me she was perfect. Always such a sweetheart. Patient and loving especially with my now 2 year old niece. She let her swing her in the swing, stack toys on top of her, read to her and play tea. Even when she was a tiny baby and would unknowingly grab Meli's ears or pull her fur... Meli ALWAYS tolerated it. Meli was also incredibly patient with these WILD and rough foster kittiens. She was truly a gentle soul. Even when scared or hurt Meli never hissed, swatted or retaliated in any way. She was 16 years old but seemingly VERY healthy and so I thought we still had plenty of time together. What happened at the Vet yesterday COMPLETELY blindsided me. What started as a routine checkup ended in tragedy. She died there in my arms. One minute she seemed fine and the next she was gone. I can't even process it. I miss her beyond words! She was a very special cat. ALWAYS came running when I called her name. ALWAYS up for a snuggle. She had these gloriously loud rolling purrs that were so soothing. She also had the softest fur of any cat I've ever met. Adrian always joked that she was some sort of crossbreed and her dad must have been a bunny because she had rabbit fluff instead of cat hair. So many things I'll miss about her but her temperament was very special. She trusted me COMPLETELY and was never in a grouchy mood. She slept on my chest every night. When I woke up without her this morning I felt this immense sense of loss. I'll miss you forever Meli. You were my best floofy girl. RIP baby girl.

Fig's first time on the harness/leash and her first "real" outing. I took her to visit a nursing home today and she did pretty good for her first time! She hid in my purse when she needed a break or felt overwhelmed by noise. That was her safe space.

Our Foster kittens did SO GOOD at the Vet today. I can't believe tomorrow they will be 9 weeks old! They got another round of boosters this afternoon. 💉 And thankfully Fern is FINALLY healthy enough to have her surgery next week but we will have to keep her completely separated from the kittens afterwards. 🥺 Which will be HARD on everyone involved and I am kind of dreading that. Our Foster kittens will be 9 weeks old this week! They have an appointment at our Vet this afternoon to get their next round of boosters. 💉 Fern is FINALLY healthy enough to have her surgery next week so we will have to keep her completely separated from the kittens afterwards. 🥺 Which will be HARD on everyone involved and I'm dreading that. Mama Fern hasn't been well these past three weeks. We were at the Vet clinic THREE times last week. Today we are heading back in there shortly. She has been suffering from unexplained, non-stop, watery diarrhea for 3 weeks now. She's also been in extreme gastric distress and cries out in pain. It's been really pitiful to watch and try to comfort her and keep her hydrated. After several different medications & antibiotics we are hopeful that she'll FINALLY be on the mend soon since we have some answers today. She has a wicked type of bacterial infection she just can't kick. We have to give her B12 shots at home for the next few weeks. DESPITE her weakness and suffering she is THE BEST momma. She works tirelessly to feed the kittens and groom them. She's been teaching them lots of new things and she definitely dedicates ALL her waking hours to their care. She is one exhausted mom. She hasn't been able to sleep because of her discomfort. This girl NEVER rests. We've been feeding the kittens ourselves, to try and ease her burden somewhat, so she doesn't have to nurse them as often. I'm shocked she's still producing milk as well as she is. Two of the kittens adamantly refuse to eat or drink anything else other than her milk but three of them have successfully started eating gruel (or watered down canned kitten food that we mix together). 🥳 And the kittens are VERY happy and healthy and growing so strong!

Foster kitty updates:
Feral Fern (momma) hasn't been doing very well the past few days. She's so tiny (basically a kitten herself at less than a year old) she's dehydrated and these kittens are demanding so much milk she's struggling to keep up. So we took her to see our Vet today. I was SO PROUD of her I could have cried. Although she desperately wanted to eat both him and the Vet Techs alive she didn't bite or scratch anyone. Poor momma Fern hasn't slept in 48 hours, and she's been in a lot of pain ever since last night, so now that she's gotten some new meds hopefully she'll be on the mend and can get some rest! The kittens are 3 weeks old now and doing GREAT. Growing so fast! They'll be bigger than Fern soon. They have their own Vet appointment coming up in a few short weeks. And lastly sweet Buster (aka: stray boy) is now neutered, dewormed and fully vaccinated. We did some new things in his catio today to help keep him occupied. The kittens demand so much of our time! We'll be rehoming the kittens once they are 12 weeks old so please feel free to "like" and share this with anyone that is looking to adopt!

Our foster kittens are having lots of "firsts". Two of them started grooming/bathing themselves and each other today - which is new! And three of them have started exploring play by swatting their tiny paws at each other and wrestling. One baby ventured out the doorway of their crate for the very first time and he returned all on his own (with a tiny boost from me to help him get back in). The same one that ventured out today was also the first baby to be born. Coincidence? I've been thinking up some names for these grey kittens. Dorian? Earl? Walkthrough of the cat enclosure we built after a stray cat showed up at our house last week. NOT at all a planned project. We already have two indoor cats of our own - in addition to a pregnant feral cat that we've taken responsibility for... so we really didn't want another cat. However when I called the Pound, after he showed up last week, they told me that he'd be immediately euthanized if we brought him in because they are so overwhelmed. After calling ALL of our neighboring counties' humane societies and SIX different local rescues we realized that no one could take him on. So to keep him safe from predators and to keep our own kitties safe from him (since he's no doubt unvaccinated in addition to being un-neutered) we decided he needed a safe place all his own since he can't stay inside the house. We have a Vet appointment this week for him to get neutered and vaccinated! Hopefully we can find him a loving forever home after his checkup. In the meantime this setup doesn't look too shabby if I do say so myself!
