Newborn at home so the dog has to go .
For those who give up their dogs when they have a baby, I'm posting this photo of a family whose 15-year-old Jack Russel Terrier is treated as one of the children (because he was their first child) and who is the protector of his two human brothers and sisters.
Never use the excuse that you had to let your dog go because you have a baby in the family and the doctor advised you blah blah blah and other lame excuses.
Never abandon your pets. They are family 😍

As most people have already heard, there are reports circulating throughout the media of an increase in incidence of canine infectious respiratory disease ( CIRD). We have received information from the Minnesota Board of Animal Health that there has been an increase in reports from veterinarians throughout Minnesota, and the majority of cases have followed the TYPICAL course that we have seen in respiratory symptoms which involve experiencing mild respiratory illness with a smaller percentage of dogs progressing to pneumonia or prolonged disease. The media attention has focused on ATYPICAL canine respiratory disease which consists of severe, acute respiratory disease in dogs without underlying risk factors that has been non-responsive to routine treatment. At this time, per the MN Dept of Animal Health, “ ATYPICAL canine respiratory disease does NOT appear to be widespread in Minnesota” as of December 5, 2023. Currently, a single causative agent has NOT been identified and it is recommended to have your dog seen by a veterinarian where special tests may be recommended should your pet become ill.
So, while nationwide numbers are not known, Colorado, New Hampshire, and Oregon officials are working with state and federal veterinary diagnostic laboratories to determine the underlying cause or causes. The Oregon Department of Agriculture is investigating respiratory illness with the following clinical signs:
Mild-moderate tracheobronchitis with a prolonged duration (six to eight weeks or longer) that is minimally or not responsive to antibiotics.
Chronic pneumonia that is minimally or not responsive to antibiotics.
Acute pneumonia that rapidly becomes severe and often leads to poor outcomes in as little as 24-36 hours.
As for now, just like with any other infectious disease, our recommendations are the same as they have been with similar infectious outbreaks.
*Keep sick/ coughing/ sneezing dogs at home and away from other dogs until 30 days past clinical signs.
*Avoid contact with sick dogs and limit contact your pet has with other dogs.
*Make sure your pet is up to date on all recommended vaccinations.
*Dogs who are at higher risk ( older dogs, brachycephalic breeds, immunocompromised dogs, or dogs with other conditions) may require early intervention.
*As always, practice good cleaning, disinfection and biosecurity protocols.
If you have a coughing or sneezing dog and want to set up an appointment, please mention the symptoms to our team and we will make sure that your visit is safe for all involved.
We will update you if any new information arises about the currently reported canine respiratory disease.
