Barefoot and Sound Hoofcare Philosophy
I operate a full time farrier service based in southern Wisconsin. I have an extensive background in barefoot hoofcare - I have completed course work in the following hoofcare ideologies - Jaime Jackson/AANHCP, Pete Ramey, Strasser, KC LaPierre. After completing this course work, I was still unable to ‘fix’ all the horses I encountered. For several years, I explored traditional farrier(steel/aluminum) work, thinking perhaps that they had the ‘answers.’ This also proved to be a limited resource. I am now a firm believer that there is never going to be one way to trim that will benefit all horses, mules, donkeys, and ponies. If that were the case, some ‘expert’ would write the book and we could all follow it. Gosh, if life were that easy. :( Instead, every horse must be evaluated as an individual.
My primary focus has become the rehabilitation of laminitic and metabolic horses, ponies, donkeys, and mules. There is so much misinformation, heartache, pain, and needless suffering in this area. To that end, I have completed courses by Dr. Eleanor Kellon, one of the most experienced veterinarians in this area. I have completed the following courses offered by Dr. Kellon: NRC Plus NRC for Performance Horses Arthritis and Lameness Basics of Reading Radiographs In addition, I am an approved farrier through the ECIR group, of which I am a member. Managing laminitic and metabolic animals requires a full spectrum approach - No one can trim their way out of laminitis, unfortunately. Managing the diet of these animals is probably more important than the trimming. I am happy to consult with owners regarding Hay testing, pasture testing, and mineral supplementation. I service southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois. Contact Information: Phone: 608-774-7490 Email: [email protected]
