With a rise in West Nile and Eastern Equine Encephalitis positive mosquitos, we are considered a high-risk area. We are here to answer any questions you may have and recommend the following to keep everyone happy and healthy!

*If your horse has not been vaccinated for EWT/WNV (eastern/western equine encephalitis, tetanus, west nile virus) at all this year or is overdue you should get an appointment with your vet asap!

*Horses that received an EWT/WNV booster if they were vaccinated this spring before May 1, 2024. If your horse was vaccinated for EWT/WN after May 1, 2024, a booster is not necessary, but clients are welcome to booster if they would like. The vaccine is very safe and can be given at 3–6 month intervals.

The office will be closed tomorrow, July 4th. Emergency services are always available 802.253.4385. Have a happy and safe 4th of July!

The Fourth of July is almost here, and many horse owners are concerned about how their horses might react to loud fireworks. 🎆

In the graphic below are some tips to keep your pets and equine companions safe during the festivities.

If your horses are staying out overnight, now is a good time to check fencing and look for any hazards like rocks, branches, or holes that could lead to injury if an animal starts running. If you have a high level of concern about your horse's response, consult your veterinarian about the appropriateness of calming agents and sedatives in advance.

No matter what your plans are, please remember to practice safety and be considerate of the people and the animals living around you so everyone may enjoy the celebration.

Thank you to our Horse Owner Education Committee for providing this information.

The 4th of July will be here before we know it! Be sure to have a plan for your horses and to order any medications you may need ahead of time!

With the Fourth of July festivities just around the corner, now is a good time to make preparations to keep your horses, farm animals and pets safe during any fireworks that will be happening in your area.

The graphic below lists some tips to get you started. If your horses are staying out overnight, be sure to check your fencing ahead of time and neutralize any hazards like rocks, branches or holes that could lead to injury if the animals start bolting. If you are concerned your animals may get loose, make sure your contact information is on a tag on the halter (provided i’is a breakaway one) or braided in their mane.
Some horses require sedation to help them get through. If you are really worried about your horse's safety, consult your veterinarian about calming agents.

This is also a good time to update and review your fire response program at your barn. Make sure you have the number for the fire department, everyone knows the address of the barn, plenty of fire extinguishers are available, and any fire hazards are removed from the barn.

No matter what your Independence Day plans are, above all please remember to practice safety and be considerate of the people and the animals living around you so EVERYONE may have an enjoyable celebration.

Happy 4th! 🇺🇸

Let's talk Equine Gastric Ulcers, Fiction vs Fact.

Fiction: Ulcers can be diagnosed on presentation of symptoms alone.
Fact: Gastric ulcers can only be diagnosed definitively through gastroscope.

Fiction: Only performance horses will get gastric ulcers.
Fact: With the prevalence estimated between 50 and 90%. They can affect any horse at any age but occur most frequently in horses that perform athletic activities such as racing, endurance, and showing.

Fiction: A post treatment gastroscope is not necessary as the symptoms have resolved.
Fact: Some horses require extended treatment - If treatment is discontinued before the ulcers have healed, relief may only be temporary.

Fiction: All gastric ulcers are the same and can be treated with the same course of treatment.
Fact: Horses can develop glandular mucosal ulceration and squamous mucosal ulceration. Treatment plans can vary from horse to horse.

Worried your horse may be experiencing discomforts due to gastric ulcers, call us today to schedule their gastroscopy exam. 802.888.2466

Did you know?

The most common parasites of adult horses cause very little stress on the nutritional status of a horse. Just because a horse looks good from the outside, it does not mean it should not to be checked for internal parasites—as a matter of fact, it is not uncommon for the horse with the best coat and highest body condition score in the herd to also have the highest F***l Egg Count (FEC)!

If your horse has access to pasture, you should assume the animal is exposed to parasites. This spring, talk with your veterinarian to establish a dewormer plan tailored to your horse’s situation that includes at least 1-2 dewormer treatments per year and FEC examinations to monitor treatment efficacy and parasite egg shedding status of individual horses.

Meet The Staff Monday
We could not be more excited to share this one - Joining the practice in June of 2024...Caroline (Cari) Wollman, DVM grew up in the beautiful horse country of Newtown, Connecticut. Between having a menagerie of animals at home, falling in love with horses and having two physician parents, veterinary medicine was a natural passion for Dr. Wollman. She got her first horse when she was 13, which only solidified her desire to become an equine veterinarian. Dr. Wollman studied Biological Sciences at Cornell University then spent a year working in a small animal specialty hospital. She attended Colorado State University, graduating with her DVM in 2023. Dr. Wollman spent her first year of practice at an equine general practice in the Seattle area. She gained skills in all aspects of equine medicine, including dentistry, lameness, reproduction and emergency medicine. While she has loved her time out West, Dr. Wollman is eager to come back to her roots in New England and join Sugar Run Equine! She enjoys all aspects of equine general practice, especially dentistry, ophthalmology and reproduction. Dr. Wollman spends her free time skiing, hiking, reading and riding. She is excited to explore Vermont with her partner and go on trail rides with her longtime equine companion, Cody, a Hanoverian-Thoroughbred gelding.

Meet the Staff Monday
If you are lucky enough to have an appointment on a Monday, than you know Peter! Peter Brandt is a Vermonter through and through - Native to the Green Mountain State, Pete has setup shop with his wife and their 4 children on their small farm in Cabot. To say Pete he has been an asset to the practice over the last 5 years would be an understatement! By spending one day a week learning from each other, Dr. Wagner and Pete are a force to be reconned with when it comes fixing feet.

Meet the Staff Monday
This tiny temporary employee is Juju. Technically just a friend, Juju is just as important to the team! We rely heavily on Juju to find any breaches in fencing at the office (she is excellent at this) and to keep One Ton endlessly entertained. If you stop by to see us be sure to give Juju some love.

Meet the Staff Monday
Have you had the opportunity to chat with One Ton? Gracing us from The Great White North, this Canadian Boy could not be happier to be here in Vermont! One Ton is still working his way up the ropes but has been a welcome addition to the team. As the on staff Good Boy, One Ton, is responsible for grounds keeping. He keeps our pastures trimmed, feed supply rotated, and is great company for patients staying in the hospital. When he's not on the clock, One Ton enjoys long lining around the property with Dr. Wagner and spending time with Juju (stay tuned for her introduction next Monday).
