We’d like to introduce you to one of our newest veterinary assistants, Kate! 😊

Born in Chicago but raised in the Apex area, Kate has always loved people and animals since she was a child. This affection has led to her passion for providing the best possible care for pets and their owners. Currently, Kate has one very spoiled Peekaboo named Daisy, who spends most of her time on the couch, basking in all the attention from her family. When not at work, you can find Kate playing video games, attending school, creating art, or spending time with her family and friends.

Help free up space in your local shelter by volunteering as a foster parent! There are various reasons why an animal is best suited for a foster home while they await their forever home. Some are baby animals who require bottle feeding, animals experiencing illness or injury, pregnant or nursing moms and their babies, and stressed or under-socialized animals who cannot tolerate a shelter environment.

Fostering is an excellent alternative to caring for an animal when adopting is not an option. Consider fostering from APS of Durham or your local shelter today!

Keep them out of reach or even safer, don’t keep them at all! Replace them instead with one of the many plants listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs on the ASPCA website under Animal Poison Control.

11/17/2023

Cats are often seen as independent creatures, but they can form incredibly strong bonds with their human companions. If you're looking to strengthen your connection with your feline friend, here are some tips to help you build a deeper and more rewarding relationship:

1. Patience is Key: Cats can be cautious, especially if they're new to your home. Be patient and allow them to approach you on their terms. Give them time to get comfortable in your presence.

2. Respect Their Space: Cats value their personal space. Don't force interactions; instead, let them come to you. Create cozy spots around your home where your cat can retreat and relax.

3. Gentle Approach: When petting or cuddling your cat, be gentle and attentive to their cues. Many cats have specific preferences for how and where they like to be touched.

4. Play Together: Playtime is an excellent bonding opportunity. Use interactive toys like feather wands or laser pointers to engage your cat in active and stimulating play sessions.

5. Provide Enrichment: Cats are curious creatures. Offer them toys, puzzles, and scratching posts to keep them mentally and physically stimulated.

6. Treats and Rewards: Use positive reinforcement with treats to reward good behavior. This can help your cat associate your presence with positive experiences.

7. Create Routine: Cats thrive on routine. Consistent feeding times and play sessions can help build trust and predictability.

8. Speak Softly: Cats respond well to soft, soothing voices. Spend time talking to your cat in a gentle and calm manner.

9. Respect Their Independence: Cats enjoy moments of solitude. Let them be when they seek alone time, and don't take it personally.

10. Provide Safe Spaces: Ensure your cat has safe and cozy spots around the house where they can observe their surroundings without feeling threatened.

Building a strong bond with your cat takes time and understanding. Every cat is unique, and it's important to respect their individual personalities and preferences. By creating a safe, loving, and stimulating environment, you'll find that your feline friend will grow closer to you over time, making your bond truly special. 🐾❀️

Dogs are more than just pets; they're loyal companions. Strengthening your bond with your furry friend is not only rewarding but also vital for their well-being. Here are some practical tips to help you build a deep and lasting connection:

1. Quality Time: Dedicate daily moments to play, cuddle, and engage in activities with your dog. Quality time is the foundation of a strong bond.

2. Communication: Dogs may not understand words, but they pick up on your tone, body language, and energy. Speak to them in a soothing and encouraging tone.

3. Positive Reinforcement: Reward good behavior with treats, praise, and affection. This helps your dog understand your expectations and encourages them to repeat positive actions.

4. Training: Consistent training builds trust. Keep sessions short, positive, and fun. Use treats and toys for motivation.

5. Exploration: Go on adventures with your dog. Whether it's a walk in the park or a trip to a new place, shared experiences create lasting memories.

6. Grooming and Touch: Regular grooming, brushing, and massaging your dog creates a strong bond through physical contact.

🌟 Everyone say hello to Christy! Christy came to Shiloh in June of 2023 after working 18 years in Human Pharmacy. Christy always knew that she wanted to have a career in the medical field and was ecstatic to learn that she could use her passion for pharmacy in a new and exciting way, working with animals and their families. She takes pride in being able to find the most cost effective ways for our client’s to obtain their pet’s medications in a timely and efficient manner. She is the Hospital’s self-proclaimed β€œGolden Girl” as she is obsessed with Golden Retrievers. When not working on pharmacy tasks, you can find her floating around the hospital offering assistance wherever she can in an effort to broaden her veterinary knowledge.
Christy was born in Germany and raised in Fayetteville, NC. She met her husband, Jeff, when she was a Freshman at East Carolina Univeristy and the rest is history. They were married less than 6 months after they met, and have been going strong ever since. After many years of military life, living in Georgia, Washington D.C. and Hawaii, they finally found a permanent home in Cary with their daughters, CateLyn, Emerson and Elianna. She has 3 dogs, Woody(Golden Retriever), Bear(Bernese Mountain Dog), and Henny(English Cream Golden Retriever), as well as 3 cats, Tiger(Orange Tabby), Norman(Maine C**n), and Stitch(Maine C**n). Christy has a strong passion for disability rights, as her husband is a disabled veteran and her twin daughters have Autism. She and her family have dedicated numerous hours advocating for veterans’ disability rights here in North Carolina and in Washington D.C., where they were part of a successful coalition that obtained legislation that now allows the VA to provide fertility care to our nation’s most severely injured combat veterans. When she is not working you can find her watching Disney+ with her girls, trying to convince her husband to take another trip to Disney World, watching nostalgic 80’s movies and tv shows, and collecting Dumbo treasures in memory of her son.

Your pets are treasured family members, and their safety during a fire is paramount. Here are crucial steps to ensure their well-being:

1. Pet Alert Stickers: Display pet alert stickers on windows, indicating the number and types of pets inside for firefighters' awareness.

2. Pet Emergency Kit: Assemble a pet emergency kit with food, water, meds, leashes, and carriers. Keep it accessible.

3. Pet Escape Routes: Involve pets in your fire escape plan, practicing escape routes with them.

4. Fire-Safe Collars: Ensure pets wear ID tags with your contact info. Consider microchipping for permanent ID.

5. Close Doors: When evacuating, close doors behind to slow the fire's spread and protect pets.

6. Designated Caregiver: Assign a trusted person to care for your pets during emergencies.

7. Window Rescue Devices: In multi-story homes, consider window rescue devices or fire escape ladders.

8. Pet-Proof Open Flames: Use screens for fireplaces, candles, and stovetops to prevent pet accidents.

9. Stove K**b Covers: Prevent accidental burner activations with stove k**b covers.

10. Secure Your Pet: When away, keep pets in safe areas, away from potential fire hazards.

11. Hazard Removal: Store chemicals, cords, and hazards out of your pet's reach.

12. Fire Drills: Include pets in fire drills to acclimate them to the process.

13. Portable Oxygen Masks: Check if your local fire department has pet oxygen masks for resuscitation.

14. Heat Sources: In winter, be cautious with heaters to prevent pet burns.

15. Fire-Resistant Safes: Store vital documents and pet records in a fire-resistant safe.

By implementing these pet fire safety measures, you protect your pets and ensure a safer environment for your entire family. Preparedness is key in emergency situations, ensuring the safety of your beloved furry family members. 🐾πŸ”₯πŸš’

11/11/2023

Periodontal disease, a common yet often silent threat to pets, can significantly impact their overall health. To safeguard your furry friend's well-being, it's crucial to be vigilant and identify the following signs of this condition 🦷πŸͺ₯:

1. Bad Breath (Halitosis): If your pet's breath consistently smells foul, it could be a red flag for dental problems, including periodontal disease. Don't ignore persistent bad breath.

2. Red or Swollen Gums: Healthy gums should be pink, not red or swollen. Inflamed gums are an early indicator of periodontal disease.

3. Dental Calculus (Tartar): The buildup of yellow or brown tartar on your pet's teeth is a clear sign of dental issues. Tartar houses harmful bacteria.

4. Difficulty Eating: If your pet is hesitating to eat, dropping food, or chewing on one side of their mouth, it might be due to dental discomfort.

5. Pawing at the Mouth: Pets in pain may paw at their mouths or faces, a clear indication of dental distress.

6. Tooth Mobility or Loss: Loose or missing teeth are advanced signs of periodontal disease. These can be painful and impact your pet's ability to eat.

7. Excessive Drooling: While some drooling is normal, excessive drooling can be a response to oral pain.

8. Change in Behavior: Pets may become irritable or less affectionate when in pain. Look for changes in their behavior or mood.

9. Blood in Saliva: If you notice blood in your pet's saliva or on their toys, it's a sign of gum disease and should be addressed promptly.

10. Weight Loss: Painful dental issues can lead to decreased appetite and weight loss.

11. Nasal Discharge: In advanced cases, dental infections can cause nasal discharge due to the proximity of tooth roots to nasal passages.

If you observe any of these signs, consult your veterinarian promptly. Early detection and treatment of periodontal disease are essential to prevent further complications. Regular dental check-ups, professional cleanings, and at-home dental care are key to maintaining your pet's oral health. Remember, a healthy mouth contributes to a healthier and happier pet. 🦷🐾
