THE GIFT OF THE GROWL
Why growling should never be punished and also never be ignored
Not all growls are negative. Some growls are play growls, attention seeking growls, pleasure seeking growls or frustration growls. They may all sound a little different and may be unique to the particular dog. This post is not about different types of growls, but about warning or aggressive growls.
When a dog growls, maybe even at us, the natural human response is to feel offended and maybe even angry. Surely dogs need to learn not to growl, growling is bad, growling is unacceptable, growling is a problem and needs to be punished so a dog learns it’s wrong, disrespectful and not to do it again, right?
NO, this couldn’t be further from the truth! A dog that growls has just provided us with a very valuable communication signal. In their way, they have just communicated to us how they feel without resorting to a bite. Dogs use growling in an attempt to avoid having to resort to biting, not to initiate it. They could just as easily have not even bothered to growl and gone straight to a bite.
Growling is a dog's way of saying "please stop," "stay away from me," "go away," “I’m not comfortable with this and I’m feeling threatened”. A dog that growls is trying hard to communicate and punishment suppresses this ability to communicate. Punishment doesn’t change the level of the dog's discomfort; it creates more stress and the dog will feel more threatened.
Growling is not the problem. Growling is the result of and the symptom of a problem. A dog that bites without the warning of a growl is a far more serious problem than a dog that growls but doesn’t bite.
Look for any other early warning signals that may precede a growl. Recognize and take note of what makes your dog feel threatened and create distance between your dog and whatever is triggering them.
Be grateful for the gift of a growl - it provides us with an opportunity to address the cause & prevent the bite.

Calling all fosters is the Raleigh area.

This is Rainey! She is the sweetest and most independent little girl. One of her vertebrae isn’t aligned with the rest so she can’t walk "normal". I know what you’re thinking…awe poor baby, NOPE! She gets around and keeps up with her foster brothers and sisters just fine. She drags herself around and she is FAST! She can even drag herself up and down a few stairs, did we mention she is independent?

We have consulted with a specialist and there is no surgery to be had and no long-term effects, so she should live a “normal” life. She does wear a diaper as she doesn’t have full control due to her spine.

She loves other dogs, loves people and enjoys long naps and cuddling. She will be adopted with her wheelchair, though she would rather drag herself then wheel herself! She is a funny girl!

Her and those ears of hers, are looking for someone to love her for who she is and her incredible personality. She would do fine in a home with any size dog, kids and would be a great addition to any home and family!

Apply to meet her at pipsrescue.org/adopt or if you have questions about her, please email [email protected]

Have we really improved the breed?

Redesigned Dog Breeds That Were Once Healthy 🐕

Over the years, several breeds have been deliberately fashioned to exaggerate certain physical traits at the expense of their health, longevity and quality of life. 😔 Here’s how some breeds looked when they were healthy, before they were “remodeled” through poor breeding practices.

See more of these dog breeds’ then and now in today’s free blog post: https://bit.ly/3OHbdln

When it is time to say "goodbye".

When it is time to say "goodbye".

The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.
You will be sad, I understand;
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.
We've had so many happy years -
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so;
The time has come, so let me go.
Take me where my needs they'll tend
And please stay with me until the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.
Please do not grieve - it must be you
Who had this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years -
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

***Rescued***
Julez. This darling is another now confirmed HW+ pup 😞 and she is REALLY struggling in the pledge and share departments (she only has $28 in support). We HAVE got to get this girl circulated and supported much more so than her current positioning. She needs help. She needs rescue. Please, please consider a pledge and a share for Julez in the hopes of getting her into the loving arms and safety of rescue. This girl is just a gem, a love! and deserves so much more than life as she’s currently living it. These Heartworm kids just sit there getting worse by the day both physically and mentally.... it’s absolutely horrible. Not all of them can come back from Heartworm disease. They and she need treatment started now for their best chance. Please help if you are able. Thank you.

Dog is in need of a home by April 1st, or he will be euthanized.

After nearly two years of life in the California animal shelter system, a dog has almost run out of time. The middle-aged dog, named Tobias, is at the OC Animal Care Center and a deadline has been set for him to be rescued…or put down. On Saturday, Tobias’ advocate shared the dire news, writing:...
