Heck YEA!!

We FINALLY got our latest Horn Shark and Cortez Ray to start taking frozen food.. on the same night, no less! Always such a big step in ensuring these fish are ready to thrive in captivity, and WOW are they slamming it down now!!

It's not often stated how important it is to put effort into feeding these critters at night, after lights have been out a couple hours, while they're still learning their new diets. But it is, and it really feels good when the overtime pays off 🤌

All that's left to do from here until they're ready to go is to slowly start feeding earlier and earlier until they start expecting food only during the day. They come in with a whole lifetime of programming that says to do the opposite, so naturally, patience is necessary when expecting them to learn new behaviors. But! This is the easy part! Pretty much downhill from here, and that's a HUGE relief!🥰

Some of you may have noticed that we used to have a renowned carnivorous plant collection, impressive even on a national level. Many of these plants were one-of-a-kind and absolutely spectacular specimens. Several worth several thousand dollars each.

Well, allow me to offer an explanation for why it is now a fraction of the size and not much to look at. We had a kid working here that no matter how hard we tried, we could not get him to pay attention to the work he was doing while on the clock. Tap water has too much salt for these plants to tolerate. In a period of 3 weeks, he had 'accidentally' watered them with salt water instead of RODI at least 3 times, strictly just not paying attention and ignoring our typical protocols. Well, his actions cost us about $40k in pitcher plants, we are unlikely to be able to rebuild this collection. These were the culmination of over a decade of collecting, many of which are irreplaceable. From over 100 plants to about a dozen left clinging to life. Needless to say, I am utterly devastated, but I figured it was worth mentioning why our previously spectacular display has so many brown, crispy plants clinging to life.

Thus is life.

I can't reiterate enough how valuable a quality microscope is for this hobby! One of our new friends just came in with a small lesion, really didn't look to be anything serious. We took a quick scraping, and this guy is TEEMING with uronema. Luckily, this is a very easy one to beat, so after about a week in our hospital room, they ought to be free and clear and good to go!
