Most of the images in this encyclopaedia were obtained during a sampling program at Jericho Beach in Vancouver, British Columbia that began during summer 2011 and ended in late spring 2012.

First saltwater order has landed! A dozen boxes now, 6 boxes of fw later today, and then on Friday a mixed order with another 8 boxes! Pretty fish heavy week.. didn't get much in the way of coral and plants this time..

Some of my personal favorites for this week, we've got super Brazilian canary eels, horn sharks, blue dot ray, linespot triggerfish, several blue dot jawfish, true red mandarins, some small remora, quoyi parrots, and.. well, several hundred other new saltwater fish too, of course!

We've been overwhelmed with customers lately who have bought products that come highly recommended by a handful of highly visible reef "news" social media outlets, only to become so disillusioned by the reality that very few aspects of the advertised value in the typically very expensive name-brand products were ever actually realized that they give up on the hobby altogether. Some of the most popular brands are currently having the biggest impact on chasing people away from this hobby.
This is exactly why we so vehemently recommend against, and refuse to support, a large number of the most "popular" brands.

Personally, I feel as though the aquarium industry would benefit a lot from influencers being required to disclose the details over the thousands of dollars worth of personal kickback value secretly solicited by them in implicit exchange for sharing visibility in the form of guaranteed overwhelmingly positive "reviews". Using visibility to line your own pockets is not "delivering the news". *cough*

I don't feel as though crafting opinions based on how much free stuff they're able to extort is honest, it's just lying to people who trust them with willfully falsified details and publicly denying that they have received anything in return for doing so.

Hopefully, a more mature and honest platform soon surfaces as the industry continues to switch gears.

Internet quality reduction aside 🙄 We took these videos to illustrate the difference that the right gear can make. The first video is using phase contrast transmitted light in darkfield combined with multi-narrowband led epi-fluorescent Illumination. Using a powerful microscope let's us see details that would normally be completely missed under 'traditional' transmitted light microscopes, as made example with the same sample in the second video. Particularly in marine environments where autofluorescence is so common, there is a night and day difference in what can be detected, even before getting into the more advanced staining protocols that are available for such setups. Unfortunately, such microscopes generally cost in excess of 10 grand and can be tricky.. but fortunately!.. We offer our services and equipment to our customers directly as well as with every purchase they make at The Local Fish Store!

*NERD ALERT* 🤓

After extensive testing, we have remained impressed with the performance of polysorbate 20 as, by far, the most effective emulsifying agent that we have used for medicative processes to date. As far as we're aware, it's not commonly used inside the aquarium industry, so we want to share our success for the sake of expanding on it!

Emulsifying agents are used in this context for dissolving meds that have poor water solubility, effectively creating a temporary polarization of non-polar solids so that they may remain suspended for longer periods of time without coelescing. Good solubility increases exposure time per dose and often affects bioavailability, resulting in lower effective dosages and, subsequently, fewer side effects.

A prime example is prazipro. This medication is delivered in the bottle alongside an emulsifying agent, allowing it to stay suspended in saltwater for about 48 hours at a time, after which you see the familiar rapid clouding of the water as it falls out of solution.

In our experiments using polysorbate 20 as our primary emulsifier, we were able to keep praziquantel suspended indefinitely(in this context- 10 days) throughout the treatment process. Additionally, the amount of p20 used to achieve solubility is many orders of magnitude lower than found in the commercial bottle.

In dips, we are able to bring notoriously insoluble antibiotics into effective therapeutic ranges using just drops per gallon. Corals exposed do not show disrelative increase in ROS(oxidative stress components; primary cause of bleaching) to controls in the weeks following treatment.

Medications are toxic! Their byproducts are toxic! Some may be less so than others, but it is still important to limit exposure to them wherever possible, not only for our tanks but for the environment at large as well. Finding ways to reduce the amount of antibiotics needed to make this hobby work is important if we want to keep access to them, as an industry, long term.
