🚨 Bordetella (Kennel Cough) Myth Buster! 🚨

Just because your dog gets the Bordetella vaccine does NOT mean they are completely immune to kennel cough. 🐾

👉 Here are some important facts to know:
1. Like the human flu shot – the Bordetella vaccine reduces the severity and duration of illness, but it doesn’t guarantee full protection.
2. Many strains exist – the vaccine helps against the most common ones, but there are multiple viruses and bacteria that can cause kennel cough.
3. Exposure matters – dogs that spend time around groups of other dogs (boarding, daycare, dog parks, grooming salons, training classes, etc.) are always at some level of risk.
4. Vaccinated dogs bounce back faster – if they do catch kennel cough, symptoms are usually milder and recovery is quicker than in unvaccinated dogs.
5. Prevention is layered – good ventilation, cleaning protocols, and responsible pet parents keeping sick dogs home are just as important as vaccines.

💡 Think of the Bordetella vaccine as your pup’s seatbelt: it doesn’t prevent every accident, but it makes things much safer if one happens.

🐶❤️ We vaccinate to protect, reduce spread, and keep our dogs healthier in community settings!

Client Reminder: Canine Cough (Kennel Cough) Awareness

We’d like to remind everyone that canine cough—also known as kennel cough—is always present in the dog community. While we do everything we can to reduce the risk in our facility, it’s not possible to completely prevent it. Dogs come and go from many environments, and the virus can sometimes lie dormant before showing symptoms.

Please be vigilant and monitor your pup before bringing them into public spaces or around other dogs.

Here’s a quick cheat sheet of what to watch for:
• Persistent, hacking cough (sometimes sounds like gagging or choking)
• Retching or coughing up white foam
• Sneezing or nasal discharge
• Lethargy or lack of energy
• Loss of appetite
• Mild fever

If your dog is showing any of these signs, please keep them home and contact your veterinarian for guidance.

Together, by staying alert, we can help reduce the spread and keep all of our pups as healthy as possible. 🐾💙

Mr. Kola has a tumor that is scheduled to come off next week on his backside, but during his stay with us, it decided to burst and start leaking. We got him to the vet today and on some antibiotics. Nothing like a good little road trip and panting.

Last Friday, our team faced every pet lover’s worst fear. Knox, a sweet and gentle Great Dane who has boarded with us for years, suddenly wasn’t acting like himself. Victoria, one of our incredible team members, instantly noticed something was off and called me without hesitation.

Within minutes, we were at the facility, assessing Knox and rushing him to Hoerr Vet in Morton—just two minutes from our Morton location. Together, Victoria and I carried all 150 lbs of this beloved boy into the clinic and onto the x-ray table. The diagnosis: a flipped stomach, also known as bloat—a condition that can be fatal within hours.

Thanks to quick action, experienced eyes, and a close relationship with Knox and his parents, we were able to relieve the pressure in his stomach in time. Surgery wasn’t an option due to his age and other health concerns, but the vet team worked hard to stabilize him. We prayed, and we waited.

Six days later, Knox is eating, drinking, and back to his normal self.

This is why we do what we do. We know our dogs. We notice when something isn’t right. And we act fast—because your dogs are like our own. ❤️

🌱 “If you build it, they will come.” That quote echoed in my mind as I walked down to our new pond this morning and noticed the edges lined with tadpoles. It reminded me why I’ve always loved that phrase…not just for nature, but for business too.

I’ve always believed in building something meaningful and becoming a resource, not a walking sales pitch. That mindset has carried me through over 20 years in this industry (7 of them with Victoria by my side) and now with the help of 14 amazing pack members (which feels surreal to say out loud!).

We recently sat down for a team meeting to check in, talk through some changes, and welcome our newest employees. We kicked things off with a fun icebreaker: “If you were a dog, what breed would you be?” The answers were not only thoughtful but personal—most people didn’t just name a breed, they named a specific dog. That’s what makes our work so special. We don’t just learn about breeds—we get to know personalities, quirks, temperaments, and all the things that make each dog them.

We also did an exercise called: “If you were the owner for a day…” Everyone answered three simple questions, and what we got back was GOLD. Real, valuable feedback from each shift, and perspectives we might have otherwise missed.

I care deeply about this team. I know I can’t do this alone, especially at the scale we’re working at now, with hundreds of dogs coming through our doors each week. My goal is for this to be a place where our employees and our furry friends can thrive. If someone has a passion or idea, I want to hear it. Let’s build it together.

Because at the end of the day, this business isn’t about chasing millions or taking advantage of people’s love for their pets. (Let’s be real—being a small business owner in Illinois isn’t cheap!) It’s about enriching the lives of the animals we’re lucky enough to know and involving our community in this shared passion.

Thanks for being a part of it. 💛 Pine Lake Doggy Daycare & Development Center Pine Lake Dog Boarding
