Things are popping and starting to grow faster after those warm days. Meanwhile winter is trying again. Lots of trays being filled these days in preparation for plants at Spence Hardware, our farmstand and the market. Also we got lucky and dug a bed of overwintered carrots so you can get lucky and find a bag in the farmstand! Nice and sweet after winter.

If you notice that the farmstand is a bit quieter it’s because we lost our miss Ellie Mae a week ago. Although she was almost 13 and seemed much younger we knew her time was close. We are thankful that she only had a couple days of feeling bad and that we got to spend the last day with her in her favorite spot over looking the farm. Words can’t explain how quiet it is around here and how much she will be missed. Timing is everything, and just as we turn a new chapter with our family, the season made a definitive change as well. We will stay open as long as we can but most likely that’ll be only a couple more weeks. If you come in the morning on a cold day and the stand isn’t loaded yet, fear not, we may delay putting things out until mid morning if it’s below freezing. The last of the tomatoes, beets, bunching onions, zucchini, and broccoli are out as well as other greens. Also, we harvested some decent sized lemongrass that can be used fresh or dried down for winter use. Thanks so much for coming!

The broccoli is speaking to you ‘come eat me’. We nailed the timing on this bed of fall broccoli, and the nice wet cool fall helped grow them big as you can see next to this farm girl’s head! Lots of fall crops in the farmstand this weekend including beets, carrots, frisée, escarole, winter squash and a few potatoes, with all the usuals as well. Good time to get your last fix for Caprese salad before the freeze.

Lots of tomatoes and basil coming on with this last of the summer heat. Come stock up for Caprese salads or dehydrate some summer sweetness for winter. Plenty of cherry or large tomatoes. Stock your freezer up with pesto made from our large leaf basil. Text Greg for bulk orders or pickup at the farmstand. 406-461-8467 thanks for your support!

Our kimchi is coming along great, nice and spicy and crunchy! If you haven’t made some yet it’s quite easy to follow a recipe. If Kimchi isn’t your thing the leaves make great taco wraps once lightly steamed. We have the last bed of Napa harvested until fall, so come get some! Also tomatoes are in full swing with some huge sizes great for sandwiches or canning. Farmstand is open 9am to dusk every day. Thanks for stopping!

We’ve got strawberries in the stand! Tonnemaker Farm had a few extra at the end of market so we decided to fill our last gap in the farmstand and make them available for you. Come get some garden candy and see if there is any other gaps in your garden to fill. This week will be the last week we have a full selection of starts at the stand then things start to dwindle down. Also the first pickling/eating cucs are in. Excelsior is a great variety that is not bitter making it wonderful for both fresh eating and pickling.

Good morning Spring! Some early morning harvest of braising mix and watering before our yearly beef butchering! We have Braising mix in the stand and it’s something I like raw as a salad. If you slightly cooked it takes the spice away. Also new to the stand is Love’s Kombucha more variety of cheese and our famous kale raab (last picture). Treat it as tender broccoli but don’t cook it much as the sweetness will be lost. Enjoy it as it only comes around once a year for a month or so!

We're so excited for Joe and Mary Hein to continue the amazing work of Wayne and Jacie Jensen and their native seed production of Palouse native seeds. One more reason to go visit Rose Creek Nature Preserve and watch them transform the landscape to Palouse native plants!

A producer of Palouse native flower seeds, situated near the base of Paradise Ridge, is selling its inventory and equipment.

Jacie and Wayne Jensen of Thorn Creek Native Seed Farm are transferring the assets to Mary and Joe Hein, the owners of Rose Creek Seed. The Heins will raise the seeds about 10 miles north of Pullman. They will begin selling seeds today at rosecreekseed.com.

This year, the Jensens taught the Heins about the business, seed production, cleaning and packaging, said Jacie Jensen.

“It is important to us that Palouse native flower seed continues to be available to landowners,” she said. “There’s not many farmers producing native seed and there’s a lot of trial and error.”

Their work has supported the improvement of the diversity of native plants for the benefit of native soil and wildlife, including pollinators.

It helps customers like large landowners, Idaho Fish and Game and tribes reestablish and enhance Palouse prairie, a type of ecosystem that has been largely replaced by farm fields.

The land where the Jensens raised the seeds will continue to be used for crops from their no-till farm such as wheat, barley, grass seed, legumes, alfalfa and canola.
