In honor of , we want to share this story highlighting the incredible veterinary care one of our orangutans received last year. 🦧🩺

Patrick the 32-year-old orangutan had overgrowing gum tissue and needed periodontal surgery to aid his recovery. In March 2023, the zoo successfully performed the surgery with the help of multiple medical professionals. 🧡

We are happy to announce the opening of Critter Climb Playland, an exciting new addition for our youngest visitors and their families! This remodeled play area has slides, monkey bars, tunnels, swings, towers, and more to explore. 💚💙🧡

Critter Climb Playland is bigger and better than our original playground. The larger footprint allows for 9 more fun elements inside. Plus, it’s now covered with a pavilion to provide endless rain-protected play all year round.

The playland is nestled between the Safari Sky Lift and Penguin Falls Cafe; access is included with admission to the zoo.

The Metro Richmond Zoo is a member of Species360, a global nonprofit with the world's most comprehensive knowledge base of over 22,000 species. To date, we have provided data on more than 3,428 animals and 376 species in our care.

The data we contribute is recorded in the Zoological Information Management System (ZIMS), now 50 years old and the world's largest source of data on species.

Species360 facilitates international collaboration in the collection, sharing, and analysis of wildlife knowledge. The result provides greater insight into animal welfare, veterinary care, population health, and species conservation. ZIMS for Studbooks is used to ensure the genetic diversity and health of animal populations in managed care like our highly reputable cheetah conservation program.

Today is World Orangutan Day!! 🦧🧡 Orangutans are some of the most intelligent animals in the animal kingdom. Unfortunately, they have become victims of poaching and deforestation, resulting in a critically endangered status. Deforestation for the establishment of palm oil plantations is the primary cause of habitat loss for orangutans.

At the zoo, we care for nine orangutans ranging from ages 1 to 44. Each ape has a unique personality and is dearly loved.

❄️ Snow leopard cubs are born helpless and with their eyes closed. They depend completely on their mother for care and protection. Cubs open their eyes around 7 days old and start crawling/walking around 3 to 4 weeks.

At 5 days old, Sasha and Kira had a neonatal exam. Our veterinary team checked their s*x and general physical condition. The cubs each weighed a healthy 1.5 pounds. Since then, they have had 3 more checkups for weigh-ins, deworming, and essential vaccinations. During their most recent exam at 14 weeks old, they each weighed 12.5 pounds.

Look how itty bitty they were at 5 days old during their first vet exam. 🥹
