Today's total was $145.00 and all surgiries went well!
Here on a mission to give these three kitties a chance at a new life instead of homelessness. We are struggling to pay down a $1300 vet bill at home, and Prevent Homeless Pets here has amazing services to provide spay and neuter to our rescues at prices we can afford, but only with your help can we keep this mission moving forward. Do we have anyone out there who would be willing to sponsor one or more of these lovelies today? Cost for us is $50 each for Eden and Griffin, and $35 for Bandit. We would be forever grateful! Paypal and Venmo links in comments. As always, thank you for your support.

This is a perfect example of letting the horse go because you don't want to feed it, and pushing the cart up the hill yourself.
In a nutshell, a person did not want to ear tip the cats she was fixing in a colony, because she felt it was mutilation.
There were more than 20, and many, if not most were black. Who could possibly think this was a winnable situation?? Ear tipping, when done properly, is the most inexpensive, yet valuable, and reliable tool, a resxue community, in fact ANY community has to.manage resources directly at the cats who need it most!
My personal rules that have served me well the past 25 years. ,
1. If it's calico, make it a priority, because it's usually going to be female.
2. Spay young, and spay them regardless of pregnancy. There will never be enough homes to prevent the suffering of thousands of kittens already born, and the mom deserves to start her new life immedietly, not three months from now tying up precious resources for the kittens too late to prevent.
3. Ear tip everyone.
4. Only put out enough food to feed the ones you intend to, at the same time each day, and police the cats you feed, if you can't prevent unneccesary breeding or treat for illness and injury, don't create the catalist to cause their suffering.
5. If they are freindly, please microchip and register it, because a rescuer is not going to be able to ask them why they are on the street, and our mission is to get them OFF the street if we can't redily identify an owner. Collars are great , but only breakaway collars are safe, and they do get lost. Give your cats a voice, inside and out, our job is hard enough as it is. We don't WANT to take your community cat, but sometimes it happens, especially if they are poorly groomed, or in obvious need of attention.

Skipping the Ear Tip. Is This a Dealbreaker?

** This is a follow up post to yesterdays ear tip post giving a real life example of the problems encountered when you don't ear tip a colony. **

Marianne contacted trapper “Joan” when the 2 stray cats she fed became 35 in just 18 months. She could afford to feed a few cats, but not 35 and certainly NOT the 100+ cats she would soon have if they weren’t fixed before kitten season. But she was adamant that these cats NOT be ear tipped. She felt it was wrong to “mutilate their ears.” Trapper Joan explained the purpose of ear tips, reassured her that it wasn’t painful and let her know that the spay surgery and rabies vaccines would be free if the cats were ear tipped. Nope, she was not going to allow them to be ear tipped!

Although frustrated, the Joan knew that there would be multiple litters in the next few months if they weren’t fixed. This site was close to her home and she had vouchers that would reimburse her costs if she DIDN’T eat tip. She decided to honor their wishes and not have the ears tipped. And this is what happened.

Everything started well. Joan trap-trained ahead of time with traps zip-tied in the open position. She made appointments to get all the cats fixed over several days of appointments. Since they wouldn’t allow ear tipping, she planned to hold them longer so the fixed cats wouldn’t be released until ALL had been trapped. It seemed like a solid plan.

On day one, 18 cats were quickly trapped and another 11 went in the next day. However, it was now apparent that this was NOT a colony of 35 cats. Most of the cats were solid gray or solid black and there should have been only 6 cats left. She could see at LEAST 15 cats on day 3 and a few of the known tomcats had not shown up at all. Joan trapped another 6 cats, but didn’t have appointments for the rest. Since she didn’t have the space to hold over 35 cats for weeks, she had to make the tough decision to release the altered cats a few days later.

Joan managed to get more appointments a couple weeks later and started trapping again. In the first group of cats she brought in, three had already been altered. She did her best to check ahead of time, but this is difficult when you have feral cats in traps. Three appointments were wasted. Trapping again, she ended up with more already-altered cats. Over the course of several months, she tried to trap more of them, but at least 8 of them remained unaltered. Two of those cats had babies over the next few months. Joan looked for the kittens hoping to grab them and use them as bait to get their feral moms. But there were 10 million hiding spots. By the time the kittens showed up, her foster space was over capacity and they were too feral to get into a rescue.

Fast forward a year and this is the state of the colony. 34 cats were fixed at a cost of over $1,200. (A few had been fixed free by another vet or the cost would have been closer to $2,000.) At least 8 of the remaining cats had never been trapped and several had a litter or two over the next year. The colony size had nearly doubled and they were not doing well because Marianne couldn’t afford to feed them all. And now she was planning to move out of the area. Of course she called Joan to see if she would “take the cats and find them a good home.”

Joan was so frustrated and depressed with this endless site that she decided to work on other sites. She didn’t feel that this site was a good use of her time because she could get so many more cats fixed starting fresh on a new colony.

Not finishing a site is taboo in rescue because the population will quickly rebound. And without ear tips, it is nearly impossible to know which feral cats are altered. Appointments are wasted, resources are squandered and the already altered cats are stressed from unnecessary re-trapping and transport to the clinic.

We’ve all encountered people who want us to fix the cats but NOT ear tip. And this can be a reasonable request if there are just a few cats and they are easily recognized due to their unique color patterns or other physical features. But if you are doing a large colony, skipping the tip is a dealbreaker. It is likely to result in an incomplete trapping, continued colony growth and a ridiculous amount of work trying to trap a few unidentifiable cats in an sea of cats who are already fixed.

Its a sad but neccesary act of kindness, they do not mourn kittens they never have, in fact, from the experiences I have had with young pregnant females, they retain their youth, and playful selves much longer. It's like it never happened. However, it is proven fact that many females that give birth, to stillborn, or lose their litters shortly after birth, can become depressed for weeks even months afterwards. Considering less than 15%of kittens born in the wild survive to 1 yr old, the kindest thing to do for a momma cat is to spay her as early as possible, for a better life to begin.

What convinced me to spay pregnant cats?

When I began my journey into TNR, of course I immediately encountered a pregnant cat. And when I looked for help from the local cat rescue organization, they let me know they could take her in and spay her.

Like many people who have not been involved in cat Rescue, I was horrified. Weren't we out here trying to save their lives? How could we talk about spaying a pregnant cat?

Another woman had seen me setting traps and working hard to trap this elusive cat, and when she found out I was talking to the group who would spay this cat she said oh I can take her, let me take her. I'll let her have her babies and I'll work on finding them homes.

I did catch the cat, and I arranged to bring her to this woman's home. When I got there, the smell of cat urine was overpowering. Walking into the house it appeared clean - but all the furniture was covered in plastic, and there were cats everywhere. Dozens of cats.

We walked into a different room where this very kind lady wanted to just open the carrier and let this shy newly trapped pregnant cat loose in this house with dozens of other cats. I didn't want to offend her, but I could see this was not saving this cat. There's no way I could leave that cat. And so I looked at her and said “you know, I can leave this cat, but I had another offer of a home for her, and they would keep her as their own cat. Would you mind if I gave her to them?”

Yes, I lied. In my defense, I will say I lied out of kindness, because the only reason this woman offered to take the cat was because she was going to be spayed. She didn't need another cat, she didn’t want another cat, and she definitely didn't need a litter of kittens. And, as soon as she knew there was another home available, she was happy to let her go.

That year, our local shelter was euthanizing 40 healthy tame kittens a week. 40. Healthy, tame, already born kittens.

I took the cat to the cat Rescue; they kept her and she was spayed and adopted out. That cat's life mattered - and she got a home. And I saved several kittens, because by spaying this cat before she had kittens, already born kittens who may have been euthanized got into homes.

Every time I took on a new TNR situation and saw kittens in the bushes -sick kittens, dying kittens, feral kittens - I became more comfortable with spaying every cat I trapped. Every time I saw or heard of a pregnant cat with complications - pyometra, mastitis, complicated births which would have ended in death for the cat without intervention - I became a strong advocate of spay them all. I only hope others who find pregnant cats can put aside the emotional response, look at the reality of Rescue, and know, spaying those pregnant cats save lives.

For anyone visiting this page, and somehow finding my phone number online, I am sorry, but AChance4Cats is CLOSED for all intakes, as I just had surgery on Wednesday. I am not returni g calls while I focus on my healing. I do not anticipate being able to help with stray cats or surrenders for the next several months as I struggle to care for the residents of the rescue already in my care.
Yes, everyone is full, but if you are able to offer to those you contact, to foster temporarily, it may get the cat you are trying to help in the door, if the cat needs medical help, try the larger rescues, shelters, and even other towns, maybe asking neighbors if they would chip in for vet care, start a gofund me to aid the rescue that helps, or possibly one of them could help the animal, but please keep asking, calling, emailing, posting on lost channels, so that no animal suffers and dies alone.
It is all I can do financially and physically to care for the ones I have already committed to save. I'm sorry.

Prayers please for our Thomas the Train. He can't keep food down and is having labored breathing. I'm pretty in tune with the cats I care for, and it's obvious he doesn't feel good, so he is getting exray's now.

UPDATE: He has fluid build up around his lungs and heart. I've given the go for a fluid analysis, to try to determine if it is something treatable. He is only 4, and such a nice, sweet boy. Today's visit is coming at a really tough time for keeping everyone fed, and their litter fresh, and basic needs met. I anticipate it will run over $400, any help would be most welcome.
I am lucky everyone has been so healthy, and that I was able to send 6 others off to adoption agencies.

I have a large ask of my followers. I need your help. My dad passed away two weeks ago after a lengthy and hard fought battle with COPD. My mom is 81, and they were married 47 years. Their anniversary is February 18th. They managed, with combined SSI, but have no savings. The next few months will be incredibly hard, emotionally, financially, even with her family, and freinds support.
I am taking one of thier cats into Pioneer Veterinary Clinic to Dr. Meiers on Wednesday, for what I am afraid is a cracked or broken tooth. He is in considerable pain, when eating, and running away from his food. Because he is semi feral, we didn't know what was going on with him, just that he appeared to have lost weight, and seemed more skittish the past month. I am preparing a side room at the rescue, so I can medicate, and contain him safely for whatever treatment he needs. He is only around 6 years old.
They especially love this little cat, and have cared for him, his momma (totally feral) and a number of other fixed feral cats ( 4 now plus neighborhood visitors) the 20+ years where they live, I helped spay and neuter them, and they doted on them like children. Two passed away in 2022, at 15+ years old. They also lost their two inside cats during Covid, they were 21 &15, and their senior dog who was 15.
Feeding this little pack was going to be a struggle until her adjusted SSI comes through, which we are told could be several months, but I am dedicating myself to relieve her of that worry, by making sure she has the food and care she needs for them for now. The reality is though, it is while I am feeding 25 rescues here, some with their own medical issues, and I will probably be facing surgery on both hands within the next several months.
I know you believe in what I do, and know the lives I have saved through the years. My folks have always been a huge part of that from day one. Until Dad's health failed, they were my biggest supporters, transporting hundreds of cats to safety, feeding, fostering, bottle feeding, and now I am asking for your help with food, and medical care for Stripes while my mom (and I) get life settled into a new normal . I don't know how much it will be, I am praying it is just an abcess, or one tooth, but I am just really in deep, and could use a couple lifelines here.
I will be adding an Amazon wish list just for Mom's pack, they pretty much eat just Friskies dry, and canned. Because most of the others are 10+ years old, she has fed them canned every night. I will be eternally grateful for any help you can send. Links for Paypal and Venmo are in the comments, and I will add the wish list as soon as it's finished.
Donations for Stripes upcoming visit can be also made directly to Pioneer Veterinary Clinic by phone at 509-765-6794 under AChance4Cats.

ASSISTANCE NEEDED
I know it is just after Christmas, but can anyone possibly help (anything helps)towards a couple of indoor safe propane heaters? I'm going to put on my Lowes card but it is nearly maxed.
We are facing temps as low as 20 below until Sunday, and I am really worried about power loss. Our radiators are barely able to hold room temps above 50 right now, and I will be checking every 2 hours tonight to see if I have to boost with one of these, I have 2 buildings. Paypal is in the comments, I also have a Venmo account.
I bought over $200 worth of food and litter last night, and that will hold us until next week, but the heat is just neccesary, because I cannot let these guys get sick. Thank you as always, for helping me help keep them safe and warm!

UPDATE: Remi is living the dream, and I am grateful to his forever family for driving through almost 2 hours of foggy roads to meet him. It was going to be a meet and greet, we thought, they had no kitty supplies yet, but after just 15 minutes with him, they asked where the nearest store was, so they could stock up, and come back to take him home. When you know, you know! 🥰 Sometimes when you love something you have to let it go, but I am glad we could offer hope to not only one family, but to two, and that everything came together for him and his new family.

Remi, DUDE! Who WOULDN'T love you (besides me, because I'm owned already by too many misfit cats ) but seriously. I knew the moment I saw you, and your people's plight you were destined to be cherished by someone special. Someone who would just love you to pieces.
I might have even had an idea who that someone was....and I knew I had to try. Because they deserve you, and because the people who loved you first (and always) deserved to know you would be in a safe, and loving home forever.
I think I am a pretty good matchmaker, or at least I used to be, until parts of my life got in the way of being able to adopt the cats I rescued into the homes I chose. I have a few locally past the 12 year mark now ❤ Maybe the stars are in my favor, and today I will see if I am right......If I still have the touch...I hope I do.

Remi: What?! You won't tell me who's coming to visit? Not even a hint?

Me: Its a surprise....

Remi: Is it Santa Paws?

Me: No, not Santa Paws. Someone BETTER, but you will just have to wait and see....

Might be a Christmas miracle if the stars align. Stay tuned!
