Please know that Summit is still seeing many cases of diet-associated dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs. DCM causes the heart muscle to weaken and the heart to become very large, which can lead to heart failure and death if not properly treated. The types of dog food that are suspected to contribute to this condition are sometimes referred to as "non-traditional diets." These are commonly grain free, but not always. The diets in question typically contain large ratios of peas, lentils, chickpeas, dry beans, potatoes and sweet potatoes. The exact reason why we are still seeing this phenomenon has not been pinpointed yet, but intensive data analysis is uncovering new information. Please read this recent article by board certified veterinary nutritionist, Lisa M. Freeman, DVM, PhD, DACVIM (Nutrition) to learn about what you should be aware of if you choose to feed your pet a non-traditional diet.

Allergic skin disease is the most common trigger for secondary bacterial infections in dogs and can include hypersensitivity to environmental allergens, food proteins, or parasites. These triggers can be accompanied by defective barriers of the outer layers of the skin that allow for bacteria to cross this protective barrier and cause infection.

Did you know that bacteria are normal residents on the surface of the skin and in the hair follicle of dogs? Usually, dogs with normal skin and immune responses are able to control the bacteria and prevent them from overgrowing and establishing infection on the skin and in the hair follicle. However, sometimes triggers like allergic skin disease, hormonal diseases, parasitic diseases, and fungal diseases can cause secondary bacterial skin infections.

Public service announcement- please share. We are in the middle of a Parvo outbreak. Currently receiving 3-4 new cases daily. Parvo is a horrible, deadly viral disease of unvaccinated puppies and dogs. It is highly contagious. The virus is spread via a f***l oral route and the virus can literally be tracked in on your shoes and can survive in the environment for years. Puppies need a minimum of 3 vaccines from the age of 8-16 weeks old (3-4 weeks apart). Vaccination is recommended through a veterinarian. The vaccine is highly effective and very safe. Please please please vaccinate your puppies and dogs.

While there are many other factors, this post covers the big changes in veterinary medicine during the pandemic. We strive to help as many pets/pet parents as possible, but can only do so much.
Dr. Barry and Dr. Sorensen work endlessly to provide great patient care while also taking care of themselves/loved ones. Unfortunately, for the unforseeable future, veterinary medicine availability will be limited. Even the emergency clinic in Pasco has been diverting (directly patients elsewhere). Please plan ahead as much as possible, don’t delay calling if your pet is sick, and be understanding if we direct you to another clinic. We hope we can find a new normal soon.
