Equine Facilitated Social Intelligence Sessions – The SPUR Model – An EFSI (Equine Facilitated Social Intelligence) session consists of playing a game with a horse – mounted or on the ground. The game is structured to metaphorically address and illustrate a behavioral or emotional issue. Horses, due to their abilities to read the herd and mirror behaviors, offer youth suffering from negative behaviors (i.e., anxiety, depression, angry outbursts, belligerence, etc.) a meaningful experience that will help them heal and evolve. Holly spent over two years apprenticing with SPUR’s author Johnny Clark at the Tulsa Boys’ Home and is certified to facilitate EFSI (Equine Facilitated Social Intelligence) learning sessions with students of all ages and therapy sessions in collaboration with licensed social workers, therapists and counselors. Private One Hour Session with All Round Equine School horse - $65 / hr

Riding Lessons for Novice to Beginner Level Riders - All Round Equine provides a safe and sane foundation in horseback riding. Our lesson horses bring a wealth of experience to the round pen and are ready to help students gain confidence, balance and muscle memory. Both English and Western styles of riding are offered. Groundwork and Round Pen Lessons - Getting to know your horse while not in the saddle and learning how to communicate clearly and in harmony with your horse is the foundation of your relationship. Groundwork can help expose and address miscommunications and misunderstandings. Learning the basics of groundwork will help you develop a dialog with your horse that will enhance your relationship both on the ground and in the saddle. Building trust and confidence, developing timing and the ability to read your horse’s every move are the goals of this training. Our horse or your horse $35 for 30 minutes
$45 for 45 minutes

Mustang Transition Training – Whether you’ve gotten a W.H.I.P. trained or just outright untrained Mustang, you and your new horse will benefit from learning the basics of communication and care. Perhaps you’re thinking about getting a Mustang but would like a little more experience and training before you adopt. All Round Equine offers training for horse and people that helps both species create a safe, respectful and meaningful relationship with the other. Our horse or your horse $35 for 30 minutes
$45 for 45 minutes

Positive Reinforcement Training – An effective and fun skillset to learn and practice. Watch as your horse anticipates his work eagerly and responds enthusiastically to your cues. Cleverly disguised as “playing” the R+ exercises you and your horse learn together will enhance your relationship and increase your ability to communicate. A firm foundation in R+ Training helps you solve communication gaps, holes in training and offers solutions to common problems (unwillingness to load, clip, tie, bathe, anxious / nervous behavior, etc.). All Round Equine Schoolhorses
All Round Equine has 3 All Stars that help our students learn to ride safely and confidently. From time to time we may have a guest schoolhorse grace our round pen, so keep on the lookout for new faces. BUCK – the Ranch Horse. Buck, (AKA Blinky, Porkchop, Shortstack and “home of the big sigh”) - Buck’s registered name is JUDGE PINE TIVIO, he is a 19-year-old silver buckskin American Quarter Horse. Buck likes neck scratches and “walkin’ fence”. He’s a big mover that reads your mind so get ready to ride with your mind. Buck is as gentle and kind as any horse can be and really connects with his students in a beautiful way. PROSPECT – Mining for gold. Prospect (AKA Prospector, Mr. Miner, Dingdong, Million Dolla’) is a 5-year-old buckskin BLM Mustang. Prospect enjoys hanging out with people and pondering the meaning of life. His best friend is Mikey (see below). Prospect is gentle and a little (ok a lot) lazy. He takes excellent care of his riders and is the ideal “first time in the saddle” horse. MIKEY – he likes it. Mikey, (AKA Michael, Michael Jackson, Jackson, The King of Pop) is a 4-year-old dark bay BLM Mustang. He likes to drink out of the garden hose and get scratched behind the ears. Mikey likes showing off his R+ skills including painting (like art!) and playing the keyboard (not kidding!). Mikey specializes in groundwork and connection, teaching his students how effective small gestures can be. Both Prospect and Mikey were gathered from the Snowstorm Mountains in Nevada by the Bureau of Land Management. They were trained by inmates at Arizona Correctional Facility in Florence, Arizona. The WHIP program is an excellent way of obtaining a gentled and saddle trained Mustang. https://www.blm.gov/programs/wild-horse-and-burro/adoption-and-sales/adoption-centers/canon-city-inmate-program

We do take horses for training. We make it very clear that our program is neither quick nor cheap. We are guarding ourselves, our clients and of course the horses from negative experiences as cited below.

Why I No Longer Take Horses For Training?

When my career began twenty years ago, everything was different. I enjoyed riding horses and soon found a way I could get paid to do it. Fast forward a bit and I was working a steady job to pay the bills as I was building my business, and in the meantime was learning a lot, about horses certainly, but as much about people.

Horses are the easy part, people are not. Quite frankly, people are hard to please and at the same time are often unreasonable. I have met some great people because of horses, many were clients, but people are still the hardest part.

Here is a situation that played out enough that I have it memorized by word.

Client-I have a horse I need started.

Me-how old is it?

C-5 or 6, I really wanted it to mature before it was started and now I dont have the time.

Me-what will be changing in your schedule so that you can keep riding the horse when it comes home?

C-oh I will find the time. I just can't afford to get hurt right now.

Me-I can't either

Me- here is what I charge...per month, and I require 90 days

C-oh I can't afford that! What can I get for 30 days?

Me-........

C-and I want to be there everyday so that I can watch you and learn what you do. Can you work it everyday on my schedule?

If life was only this simple. The truth is that training horses is a very tough business. I have recently had numerous aspiring trainers reach out to me, which is great. But everyone needs to realize that that the industry needs to fix some things. If we dont do some things soon, I fear no one will be training horses in a decade, especially starting colts. And that is where I want to focus on.

We have too many people that have trained one or two and think they know everything and want to throw stones at everyone else that might do things differently. Then, what realistically needs to be charged to make the finances work is much more than most will pay. So why would a young person want to start something that takes considerable time to learn, doesn't pay much, and has a high risk of a short career?

So here is what I believe can be done. Take it or leave it.

Be reasonable, despite what you may think, ALL young, uneducated horses can have their moments. I know in the YouTube, TikTok age that doesnt happen, but in the real world it does.

Don't be cheap. It isn't the trainers responsibility to make horses affordable for you.

Understand that the process of training a horse is a VERY time consuming, thought out process filled with immense intentionality in everything and that doesn't end when you pick them up from the trainers.

And finally and most importantly, understand that horses are not programmable. Just because a trainer spends tons of time teaching a horse to do all the things, but you do everything differently they they did. You will get a different result. That wasnt and isn't the trainers fault. Ask the same way they did or expect something different.

I have just scratched the surface of the topic. Much more could, and maybe should be talked about. And to be fair the horror stories can be told from both the client and trainers perspective by many of you. So lets see if we can communicate better with each other and do our best to look at life from potentially others perspectives, not just our own, just like when we are working with our horses.

Horse Training vs. Horse Fixing

Many in the equine industry mistakenly believe that horse training and horse fixing are the same. In reality, they are fundamentally different.

Training a horse is most effective when starting with a clean slate—an animal that hasn't yet learned to evade, kick, bolt, or develop other undesirable behaviors through mishandling. Consequently, the techniques for training and fixing horses differ significantly, with fixing often requiring more assertive measures.

It's essential to recognize that horses are incredibly powerful creatures, weighing approximately ten times more than humans. When they develop bad habits such as pulling away, bucking, or lifting their feet out of your hand, these behaviors can quickly become dangerous. When horses reach a point where their habits are unsafe, they are often subjected to specialized programs that utilize methods like hobbling, laying the horse down, or roping from head to toe. These approaches are designed to re-establish respect and ensure the horse recognizes that guidance, not escape, is the goal.

Such interventions are necessary because many horses become unsafe to handle with standard training alone, especially when restraints or mental exhaustion are not employed. While restraint is not ideal, there are situations where it becomes the only viable option for handlers committed to avoiding harsher measures.

As trainers, our love for horses drives us to do our best. Recognizing that training is a two-way relationship is crucial—horses can be our friends, and respect is the cornerstone of that bond. There are multiple ways to train a horse, but earning and commanding respect remains the most vital element.

I want to address a comment I’ve actually gotten several times from the same person, saying it’s concerning that a kids’ horse needs to be schooled at a show. They’re trying to turn it into a ‘catch me’ moment… but here’s the thing: kids’ horses only stay kids’ horses because adults ride them. A safe, reliable youth mount doesn’t happen by accident. Hollywood and Disney are not real. Stop romanticizing horses. Horses don’t magically sense that it’s a child and behave perfectly. Trust me, I’ve met plenty that would give themselves 100 points for yeeting a kid across the arena.

Kid horses are maintained through consistent schooling, reminders, tune-ups and keeping them honest. If your trainer isn’t regularly riding lesson horses, schooling client horses, and checking in on what your kids are sitting on, that’s when you should be concerned. Any reputable trainer is in the saddle often. It’s literally part of the job. And it’s the biggest reason your child gets to ride a horse who is kind, confident and well-prepared.
