This morning as I fed the dogs and let them out for their morning constitutional, like many rescuers I thought how sad it was to spend a Christmas in rescue. Then I realized that it was, for three of the five anyway, quite possibly the first Christmas they’ve ever not been cold, or hungry. The first time there was no threat of neglect. While Hank was a former pet surrendered for his safety after an issue with another dog in the home, and Paquita will be having her fourth Christmas in rescue (she is feral and unadoptable, but happy), the other three have only been here weeks or months. Before they were chained, or strays, and no one obviously cared about them. Perhaps it’s not such a bad holiday after all.

UPDATE: PUMPKIN HAS A FOSTER MOMMY NOW. THANK YOU, NEW VOLUNTEER JENNA!

SEEKING A TEMPORARY FOSTER HOME FOR SWEET ELSA

Else is a sweet senior Great Pyrenees estimated to be between 8 and 10 years old.

She came into Surry County Animal Control about a month ago and tested heartworm positive. Being that she was so elderly and heartworm positive, and because the shelter is always so full with other needy dogs, animal control staff wasn’t sure if she would make it out.

They contacted us to see if we could intake. As a medical case at SCAC we of course said yes. She went to a temporary foster home to get settled and begin the process of heartworm treatment.

Elsa is now ready to move to a different foster home. Her current one is set up to handle initial intakes and it is best if we leave a space like that open for the new ones that will inevitably need to come through.

Elsa does great in the home and enjoys the company of other dogs and people. She does prefer not to share food with other dogs, so separate feeding and treat times are best. She is in need of a foster home for about two more months, so this is a short term assignment - perfect for anyone wanting to try fostering but needing to keep it short and sweet. She is also shaved down due to having terrible hair mats when she first came into our care, so there is a lot less hair to go around (which may be important for some).

Please message us if you can help sweet Elsa
