Winter Heartworm and Flea Prevention

As the temperature drops, it's easy to assume that heartworm and flea prevention for your pets can take a back seat. However, these pesky parasites don't hibernate in the winter, and they can still pose a threat to your beloved fur babies.

Here's why winter prevention is crucial:
1. Heartworms Don't Hibernate: Heartworm-carrying mosquitoes may be less active in the cold, but they're not gone. Heartworm disease can be devastating, and prevention is the best defense.
2. Fleas Find Warm Havens: Fleas can infest your home year-round. With the cozy warmth inside, your pets can still fall victim to fleas. Prevention is the key to keeping them itch-free.

Stay consistent, continue your pet's heartworm and flea prevention regimen throughout the winter. Consistency is key to keeping them safe.

On this Veterans Day, we honor not only the heroes in uniform but also the four-legged companions who served alongside them. Military working dogs have provided loyalty, protection, and service in times of need, just as you have. Their bond with service members is a testament to the strength and courage found in all who serve.

As a veterinary practice dedicated to the well-being of animals, we understand the special role that pets play in the lives of veterans and their families. Whether they offer companionship, emotional support, or assistance, these pets are true heroes in their own right.

To all who have served, and to those who continue to serve, thank you. Your service will never be forgotten. We are honored to serve you and your pets with the same dedication and care that you have shown to our nation.

Flea and tick prevention:
It's crucial to keep up with year-round flea and tick prevention to ensure your pet stays safe and healthy all year long!

Fleas and ticks aren't just a nuisance—they can pose serious health risks to our pets, including skin irritation, allergic reactions, and the transmission of dangerous diseases like Lyme disease.

Common Signs:
-Reduced appetite
-Fever
-Limping
-Lameness

Fortunately, there are many safe and effective options for flea and tick prevention available, including topical treatments, oral medications, and collars. We can help you choose the best option for your pet based on their lifestyle, health history, and risk factors.

By staying proactive with flea and tick prevention, you can protect your pet from discomfort and disease while enjoying peace of mind knowing they're happy and healthy by your side.

Chocolate toxicity
As Halloween approaches, it's essential for all dog owners to be aware of the potential dangers lurking in those tempting bags of sweets. Chocolate, a Halloween staple, can be highly toxic to our furry friends. Here's what you need to know to keep your dog safe:

🚫 No Chocolate Treats for Fido: Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which are toxic to dogs. Even small amounts can lead to symptoms of chocolate poisoning, including vomiting, diarrhea, rapid breathing, and even seizures.

👁️ Keep Candy Out of Reach: Dogs have a knack for finding treats, so make sure all Halloween candy is stored securely, far away from your dog's access.

🏡 Secure the Trash: After your Halloween festivities, dispose of candy wrappers and leftovers securely. Dogs may be attracted to the scent, and ingesting wrappers can lead to blockages.

🐾 Know the Signs: Be vigilant for any signs of chocolate toxicity, such as restlessness, increased heart rate, panting, trembling, or excessive thirst. If you suspect your dog has ingested chocolate, call the office at 815-244-2382 or text us at 815-240-0860.
