Hi there, I'm Velvet! I've been told I'm as sweet as candy and I know that's true! I'm a 3-year-old snowy white princess who loves to be right by your side, a true Velcro dog . You'll never feel alone with me by your side. I've got a heart full of love and I'm eager to share it with you. I love it when you talk to me, my tail wiggles a lot!
I'm playful and smart too, I've possibly lived in a house before because I keep my kennel clean. I'm gentle and cuddly, the perfect companion to curl up with after a long day. Adopt me and I promise to fill your life with joy, laughter, and endless love! They found me running as a stray on 6/1/2024 with No Collar, No ID, No Microchip and No One came for me. Since I was a stray, we donā€™t know how I am with cats or kids. Iā€™ll also need to meet my new housemates before I get adopted to make sure we all get along. Please come meet me at the Morrow County Dog Shelter, Mt. Gilead, OH or call 419-946-1747 for more info on me. If Iā€™m not a good match for your family, could you please share me so I can find my furever home?ā€

Hi, I'm Luke! I'm a 2-year-old happy, brindle house hippo who's as gentle as a summer breeze. Don't let the picture fool you, I'm happy, there were treats involved and I couldn't keep my eyes off them! I can be a little bit shy at first, but once I warm up, I'm your best friend! I'm smart too - I've mastered crate training and know some commands. I'm good with other dogs and I may be a little submissive, but I'm also a happy boy who loves cuddles! Why should you adopt me? Well, I promise to bring joy, companionship, and endless cuddles into your life. I'm ready to be your loyal friend, are you ready to be mine? They found me as a stray on 5/14/2024 with No Collar, No ID but I had a Microchip, however, no on returned the calls or came to get me. Since I was a stray, we donā€™t know how I am with cats or kids. Iā€™ll also need to meet my new housemates before I get adopted to make sure we all get along. UPDATE: 6/15/2024----New Stray arrival.

Male, Great Dane
He has abrasions on 2 of his feet, likely from hot pavement.

No Collar, No ID, No Microchip

Found in Perry Township

*** he is not available for adoption yet, he just arrived today.

6/16--we shut off the comments on this post. Primarily because we were getting questions about him that we simply cannot answer at this point due to him just arriving (nor can our volunteer that helps with the page--she has not even met him).
AND we do not monitor the page 24 hours a day so when we log in and have multiple questions it can be a bit overwhelming to read/address those questions and try to respond correctly.
If someone believes he is their dog or someone has interest in adoption, should he become available, we ask/suggest that you call the shelter directly to speak with someone or leave a vm for a call back. ALL stray dogs in the state of Ohio that are in county dog shelters must be held a minimum of 3 days.

NOTICES for the week of June 17th:

June 19th holiday.

So we WILL be open on Wednesday June 19th.

***There are 11 County recognized holidays. Our shelter, like other county offices, close on each of those days. Because of an event on Friday that we scheduled we have chosen to be closed that day instead of the actual holiday.

___________________________

AND:
Next week it will be in the 90's......if you are a volunteer and plan to come here----please be advised we will limit your and the dogs exposure to the elements as much as we can to prevent heat exhaustion etc.

Thank you-

Meet Peanut, a 1-2 year old lovable, brindle house hippo whoā€™s recently (5/17/2024) made our shelter his temporary home. His mellow temperament and gentle nature make him an instant friend to all. Peanutā€™s sweetness is irresistible! Heā€™s a loyal companion, always eager to offer his cuddles and affection. He actually prefers this over exploring the nature trails. Despite being new to the shelter, Peanutā€™s friendly disposition shines through, making him a favorite among our staff. Heā€™s simply a joy to be around. If youā€™re seeking a cuddly, loyal, and gentle friend, Peanut is your perfect match! Come meet Peanut at the Morrow County Dog Shelter, Mt. Gilead, OH or call 419-946-1747 for more info on him. Since he was a stray we don't know how he is with kids or cats. If Peanut isn't your pick, please share him so he can find a home!

Hi there, I'm Mila! I'm a 3 year old friendly gal who loves everyone I meet. My tail wags at the sight of other dogs and children, they make my heart sing. I'm known for my loyalty and cuddly nature. I enjoy playful moments, but I also appreciate quiet times, snuggling up close. I'm smart too, I know a few tricks and I'm always ready to learn more. Walks are my favorite, the world is so exciting! Treats? Yes, please! I've been spayed and vetted, so I'm ready to go. Why should you adopt me? Because I'm a sweet, gentle soul who will bring joy and love into your life. *Please be patient with me, I have separation anxiety, I can't help I just want to be with my people. I was adopted twice and returned twice, they didn't take the time to let me decompress and work with me. I was only there a day. I'm going to need someone who's home most of the day and just to be given a chance to show how good I can actually be. - Come meet sweet Mila at the Morrow County Dog Shelter, Mt. Gilead, OH or call 419-946-1747 for more info on her. We don't know how Mila is with cats. If Mila isn't a good match for you, please share her so she can find her furever home.

Quote from someone adopting one of our dogs:
"He is a totally different dog at home than he was at the shelter. He is calmer, less pull on lead, no accidents (thus far), and even seems to understand a few basic commands." While we do have a great volunteer base and we know many of them work on basic commands and proper leash manners the dogs do NOT always show well here (in or out of their kennel).
ALWAYS ask about the dogs that are not quiet, sitting still or might be cowering in the back of their kennels. AND for gosh sakes ASK about the HOUNDS. They are intelligent, gentle creatures (generally speaking). Shelters are overwhelming and stressful places. Behaviors that are not normal for a dog often become normal in shelters due to the environment. They just need you to give them a chance!!

We are so thankful to have such amazing supporters of our Morrow County Dog Shelter, Mt. Gilead, OH! These are some donations we received recently & we'd like to highlight our 3 year old supporter Sam's messages with their donations... "Give these to a cute puppy and give it a kiss from Sam. Puppies need lots of treats from Sam. You can us this on your ducks too (Dawn dish soap), not just for kittens and puppies from Sam." How adorable are these?! On stressful days, these little unexpected notes bring a smile to the Morrow County Dog Shelter, Mt. Gilead, OH staff and the treats bring wagging tails to the dogs waiting for a home! It takes a village to help save the dogs and we're so very thankful you are all part of it! ā¤ *His mom pointed out that they follow a couple shelters, so he thought we have kittens too. šŸ˜‰

Hi, I'm Jedi! I'm a mellow fellow, with a heart full of sweetness & gentleness. I'm friendly & I promise to greet you with tail wags & soft nuzzles. I'm an explorer at heart, so I'd love to join you on walks or just sniff around our backyard. Iā€™ve got my leash skills mastered. I'm also quite laid back, I'm perfectly content to just chill with you on the couch. My freckles are part of my charm, & my squishy love is ever ready to be showered upon you. I'm two years old, but my spirit is timeless. I'm not just a pet, I'm a companion, a confidante, a source of unconditional love. Adopt me, and I promise to fill your life with joy, laughter, and a whole lot of love. Jedi arrived as a stray on 5/17/2024 from Chester Township with No Collar, No Microchip, No Id and no one came for him. WENT TO RESCUE

Hi, I'm Jenny! I'm a sweet, friendly, and a bit goofy Walker Coonhound. I love to make people laugh with my playful antics. I'm also gentle and smart, so I learn new tricks quickly. I'm mildly playful, which means I enjoy a good game of fetch, but I'm just as happy to curl up for a cuddle. I take treats gently, showing my kind nature. I love everyone and thrive on affection. So, why should you adopt me? Well, I'm full of love, laughter, and I promise to make every day brighter. I can't wait to meet you! Question and Answer:

1. Why do your dogs go to the prison?
For training.

2. What are they taught?
House manners, basic commands, house/crate trained, and in some cases a few basic tricks.

3. When do they come back to the shelter?
They do not. They stay at the prison for at least 4 weeks or until an adopter is approved.

4. How do we adopt a prison dog?
Contact us and make arrangements to complete an application. Once we have an application we will then schedule you to go to the prison (in Marion) to meet the dog(s) that you have interest in and applied for.

5. Can we adopt first come first served?
No. We take apps for all dogs. In some cases depending on the level of interest (specifically if we have a high volume of callers OR the 4 weeks have not been met yet) we will put an applications time limit in place. ***please note that in some cases dogs do not get calls initially OR out of the blue we get a renewed interest and all of the sudden have multiple calls. If a dog has no other interest OR we are in the process of trying to approve someone---provided we approve that app we will not actively schedule appts for meet and greets.

6. How do you decide?
Good question.....it's never easy----we always feel like we hurt someone's feelings, break a heart, or in some cases make someone angry. We do our best to pick what we consider the best home.....BUT sometimes we have multiple best homes and we can only choose 1 of them.

--We cannot always know how successful an application process will be, or how many apps we will get--if any, or if, as mentioned above, all of the sudden a dog hits social media and people start calling. For example: Domino---he had been with us for nearly 2 years with rarely any interest.......and then recently after a social media post/share the interest for him hit an all time high and we got several calls which resulted in several apps. Sometimes people don't call first they just show up. ***what we have learned over the years is that just because some one calls does not mean they will ultimately come in or people stop in that didn't call first......and if we only accept 1 phone call and or 1 app (and turn everyone else away) for a dog we often times find ourselves needing to start all over again when or if the only app does not result in an adoption or the caller chooses not to come in to meet the dog or follow through with subsequent meet and greets. So we will always, at the very least, accept names/ #'s for callers so that if we do find that the apps we have already accepted do not produce an adopter we will have a back up plan so to speak.
