A good reminder even for a seasoned dog. You can’t beat time in the woods. Ike couldn’t have looked worse for a few hunts. Loose on a tree, cold tracking and just treeing bad trees. I took a step back at what I was doing with him. Thought I had isolated the handler issue. That still wasn’t working. My frustration finally boiled over and I decided I was going to just run him until his legs fell off. (Previously I’d hunt him every few days). I hunted him am and pm Saturday and Sunday for hours. Today I turned him lose for our normal after school hunt. We made 12 trees and looked at 10 squirrels right up to dark. He didn’t leave a single tree with the exception of having 2 in one tree and the second squirrel timbering out, which he re-treed and we got. I’ve said it hundreds of times to potential clients that I don’t train dogs I simply give them time in the woods to do what they do naturally. A point I sometimes forget when working with my finished dogs. They need just as much time as a started pup to look their best and keep away bad habits.

What do you do when you get back from a 5 day hunting trip? Load the dogs up and do it again.
Even drug the pup along for the ride this time. Had to let Ike get back to his true calling on the road.

Put some drag work in today. 30-50yds of drag, she threw up on wrong tree first but never let out a sound until she got on the right tree. 9 weeks old.

He can sure tick me off in a comp hunt, but he’s hard to beat in front of kids. He held a tree through about 25 shots and never skipped a beat.

She finally has a name and a new hatred for squirrels. First time showing her a dead one.
She made the 30yd or so track, missed at first but finally found the right tree.

WHAT A DAY! Ike has been dialed in the last two hunts but today was special. Made about 8-9 trees on a new block of land. Managed to bury the truck up. While assessing how stuck the truck was, Ike trees at 200yds. Decided to go to that tree and figure out the truck later. Got that squirrel and came back to winch out the truck. As soon as the truck was back on solid ground I picked up the garmin to find him treed at 475 past the hole we just got stuck in. Rolled the dice on trying to cross again and hit the hole at full speed. Was able to get within 200yds of him. Got to the tree. Squirrel was hiding in the top of a pine that Ike was under. Knocked him out and started to mark the spot because it was covered with deer sign. Ike re-trees 75yds down the draw, squirrel Timbers to about 50yds, drop it. Get it from him and he takes off 200yds in the direction of the truck. Trees 2 more times before we walk out to the truck get them both. I decided it was time to end the hunt but didn’t think to leash him. Before I could get packed up and squirrels out for daily picture he was treed again across the road at 225. Should have went to him but I was put out and it was getting dark. I toned him a few times but had to put a little shock to him so I’m sure he had one in his sights. Ended the hour or so hunt 13/14

Didn’t get a chance to post today. It was little man’s birthday. We took a short trip behind Muddy Creek Atomic Ike. went 5/7 in an hour. Then got to meet up with some old veterans. Mr James Quick, Randy York, and Jim Hearnsberger. Hope to be doing this and carrying along the legacy of dog hunting as long as these guys have.
