Ray Cooney is the master of British Farce; his “Run For Your Wife” is his funniest and most physically-demanding play.

The story concerns bigamist John Smith, a London cab driver with two wives, two lives and a very precisely planned schedule for juggling them both, with one wife at a home in Streatham and another nearby at a home in Wimbledon.
Trouble brews when Smith is mugged and ends up in hospital, where both of his addresses surface, causing both the Streatham and Wimbledon police to investigate the case. His careful schedule upset, Smith becomes hopelessly entangled in his attempts to explain himself to his two wives and two suspicious police officers, with help from his lazy layabout neighbour upstairs in Wimbledon.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

John Smith - Male (40s)
Quick-witted and inventive, John is a taxi driver that seems very ordinary, except that he's a bigamist. The role requires excellent comic timing and physical versatility. An “ordinary guy" not afraid to lie to save himself. A sleaze-ball you don't want to hate.

Barbara Smith — Female (40s/50s)
Likable with genuine naivety. Thinks the best of people but has a tipping point. Happily married and unsuspecting (at first). Like the character of Mary, Barbara requires good comic timing and physicality.

Detective Sergeant Troughton - Male (30s-50s)
An earnest, severe, and somewhat intimidating police officer. Requires good vocal variety and the ability to be commanding physically and verbally. A bear who you want to hug, but don't want to p**s off.

Bobby Franklyn - Male (20s+)
Barbara's neighbour, an extremely over-the-top, flamboyant dress designer, who has no shortage of charm and wit (with the occasional flair for the dramatic). A role that especially requires good comic timing. [Best role in the show/audience favorite]

Reporter - Male or Female (20s and up)
Fun, tabloid-esque reporter, pushy to the point of being rude.

In 2021, the Playhouse staged Ray Cooney’s “Run For Your Wife” as our first full length production. Unfortunately, it had an abbreviated run due to Covid. This June, we are reviving it for a full run, with some of the original cast returning.

This 1982 British comedy centers around John Smith, an "ordinary" London taxi driver who secretly has two wives in two different towns. When John inadvertently blows his own cover, the comic complications multiply.

Auditions will be held on Monday, April 7 and Tuesday, April 8 (6:00pm - 8:00pm), for the following roles: John Smith, Detective Sergeant Troughton, Barbara Smith, Bobby Franklyn, and The Reporter.
British dialects required.

Noah Bryant, Elder Thomas (Saturdays and Alternating Sundays)

Noah Bryant, 23 years old, grew up in Hawaii. Since studying in film school, his love for both expression and storytelling has only expanded. He's acted in a dozen short films, classes and workshops, and this is his third professional theater production.
His current short-term goal is to learn how to use parts of himself to transform into different human beings, and to learn a proper process in tackling a role. His long-term goal is to make a living off of acting— aspiring to get better at the craft every day. During downtime, he is a cinephile, loves reading plays and novels, exercising, and playing sports, and is always thrilled just to come home to his wife.

THE STORY:

When a mysterious invitation brings Blanche DuBois back to New Orleans, she finds herself once again face-to-face with the smoldering Stanley Kowalski. They are soon joined by luckless salesman W***y Loman and hard-drinking, hard-fighting couple George and Martha, and suddenly all bets are off. Add a folksy Stage Manager and the comic genius of The Second City team, and the question quickly becomes: Will the American theatre ever be the same?

This hilarious result of collaboration between Writers Theatre and Chicago's world-renowned comedy theatre, The Second City, asks the intriguing question: What happens when the most recognizable characters from some of the greatest American plays of the 20th century suddenly find themselves sharing the same stage — a deliciously satirical mash-up of A Streetcar Named Desire, Death of a Salesman, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Our Town.

Memory Strong (Liz)

After an almost two-year hiatus from the stage, Memory is thrilled to join the talented cast and crew of Playhouse 615's The Whale. Memory has been seen as all kinds of characters in all kinds of shows throughout the Nashville area over a long enough time period that we don't really need to talk about it. When not rehearsing for a show, or working her full-time job as a Senior Exemption Specialist with The Foundation Group helping nonprofit organizations get their tax exempt status, you might find her singing with Rewind Nashville, a classic rock band, or at Sid Gold's Request Room, her Third Place (IYKYK). Memory's First Place will always be with her husband and BFF who has given her both roots and wings - wherever you are is home. IFLY.

Sydney Michelle Grey (Mary) has had the pleasure of performing in both the Hollywood Fringe and the Short & Sweet Festival. This is her first Nashville production. She studied with the late great actor James Caan. You might also catch her in the friendly skies where she has been a flight attendant for 20 years.
