😺Tips for a purr-fect vet visit!
😺At VCA Mount Kisco, we are proud to have Fear Free Certified Veterinarians! This means our Veterinarians and support staff are trained in providing clam care ensuring the least amount of stress for your cat. Here are some helpful tips:
😺Pick the right carrier. Make sure your cat carrier is:
Made of sturdy plastic that is washable and easy to clean.
Has holes to allow for circulation of air, but is not too see-through so your cat can still feel secure.
Has a detachable lid that means the vet can remove the top and examine the cat in the base of the carrier.
😺Train your cat to use the carrier.
You need to break the association between the carrier and a scary visit to the vet, and make new, positive associations with it as a place to relax and eat treats in. Find a place in your house where the cat carrier can live all the time and be a place that your cat might enjoy. Consider placing their favorite blanket inside so they feel comfortable. Once your cat ventures into the carrier on their own, reward them with treats! You may also place their favorite toys inside.
😺Train your cat to be handled.
You could gently look in their ears, lift the tail up, and get them used to being groomed or even to have their teeth brushed.
Remember to make sure it is a positive experience. Pick a time when they are receptive to being handled, and be very gentle with them.
Keep each session very brief so they does not get fed up. Remember to go at the cat’s pace, ensure it is pleasant for the cat at all times, and be very generous in using treats and petting to keep the cat happy.
😺Use bedding inside the carrier that your cat has slept on, not a clean blanket or towel. Their scent will help them feel safe.
😺Bring treats to your appointment to reward the experience during the appointment.
😺Feliway spray replicates a calming feline pheromone that can be used on bedding to help your cat feel calmer.
