Your primary care veterinarian may recommend that your pet see a veterinary dentistry specialist for a number of reasons. This can happen if your pet needs a more complex procedure, if the treatment requires specialized equipment not available at their clinic, or if they feel a specialist can provide the best care for your pet’s unique needs.

Gingivitis (inflammation of the gum) often begins below the gumline. Preventing gingivitis involves consistent dental care to reduce plaque and tartar buildup, which are the primary causes of gum inflammation.

An oral abscess is a localized infection where bacteria infect the tissue around the tooth or gum. Often resulting from an injury or advanced dental disease, this infection causes pus to build up, forming a painful, swollen area that can affect the surrounding tissues, including the gums and jawbone.

While dental treats may help reduce plaque buildup to some extent, they are not a substitute for regular brushing and professional dental care. Dental treats can help with tartar control, but they don't reach all the areas of a pet’s mouth, especially the back teeth.

Giving your pet ice to chew on can damage their teeth. 🧊❌ Hard objects like ice can crack or fracture teeth, leading to pain and potential dental issues. Instead, opt for pet-safe chew toys or treats designed to promote dental health.

The environment is important when you’re embarking on an oral hygiene journey with your pet. 🦷🐾 If your home is loud and bustling, it can cause your pet to become distracted and on edge. Keeping sessions short, calm, and stress-free will help your pet accept toothbrushing in the future and build a solid foundation for a routine.

This is a myth! Many dental issues, like gum disease or infections, are hidden below the gumline and only detectable through exams or X-rays.

We love the DIY spirit, but when it comes to your pet's dental health, homemade toothpaste can sometimes do more harm than good. Stick with vet-recommended pet toothpaste, such as this clinically proven, VOHC-accepted, and #1 veterinary dentist-recommended toothpaste by Petsmile. Thrilled to share this heartwarming success story! Our dedicated team at VDS Mt. Laurel ensured top-notch care for a beloved 13-year-old Yorkie. Thank you, Marc, for your kind words and for detailing your experience with us. 🐾✨ Read the full review below:
“VDS in Mt Laurel was absolutely wonderful in taking care of our 13 year old Yorkie's dental issues. She had severe gum hyperplasia and a benign mass. Dr. Eroshin consulted with us in the morning and went over everything with us thoroughly. He did let us know it was possible that our dogs remaining teeth may all need to come out depending what the X-rays showed.
I did a lot of research and asked several of the vets and vet techs we know and use here in NJ who was the best as we will travel anywhere and spend whatever is necessary to give our pets the best care possible. VDS was referred to very highly by those we spoke with and the 5 star reviews here are also accurate in my opinion.
Because our dog was 13, I wanted a dedicated anesthesiologist as well to monitor her throughout the procedure which VDS has on staff there. This gave us peace of mind having a veterinarian anesthesiologist specialist plus it allows the surgeon to just focus on the surgery.
Our dog ultimately had her remaining 14 teeth pulled as the X-rays showed how bad the tooth to bone had deteriorated. Dr. Eroshin showed us the X-rays when we came to pick her up in the afternoon.
The entire staff from the time when we booked the appointment to when we arrived, during the surgery with updates and after the surgery were all 5 star. The staff there was helpful, friendly and they all seemed to truly care about the animals coming in for surgery or consults as did the doctor.
These doctors are the best of the best. People don't realize how many years of school, residency and training is required to become a vet let alone a specialist like those at VDS. I did see some reviews here complain that it can be expensive and it is, but the time and m
