The other day we tested over 100 beef bulls pulmonary arterial pressure (aka PAP testing).PAP testing is utilized to find bulls (or other cattle) that may be susceptible to high mountain disease (meaning they are likely to have heart failure at high altitudes and pass that onto their offspring). This disease has been seen in Utah where cattle are ran at high elevations (5000+ feet). This is performed by placing a tube through the jugular vein all the way to the pulmonary artery coming out of their heart and measuring the mean arterial pressure there. The test needs to be performed at 5000 + feet in elevation - to be accurate.
