What is H5N1?
H5N1, commonly known as avian influenza A or bird flu, is a highly pathogenic strain of influenza virus that primarily affects birds, but cases have recently been reported in wildlife, cattle, cats, and humans.

What do we know about the latest outbreak?
Recently H5N1 influenza cases have been reported in cats that have consumed contaminated commercial raw food diets, unpasteurized milk, or had contact with wild birds and cattle.

Precautions:
Consider discontinuing your pet’s raw diet. Even if their raw food is human grade, frozen, or freeze dried, this does not prevent the potential spread of pathogenic bacteria, parasites, or H5N1 that may be present in the food. Consider cooking your pet’s raw food and/or consulting your veterinarian about diet change.
Limit your pet’s access to wild birds that may be carrying the virus and avoid giving them raw milk.

What are the symptoms to watch out for in our pets?
Clinical signs in pets may include the following:
• Loss of appetite
• Lethargy
• Fever
• Neurologic signs (ataxia, circling, tremors, seizures, sudden blindness)
• Copious oculonasal discharge
• Difficulty breathing
We recommend seeking veterinary care if your pet shows any of these signs. If they are having any life-threatening symptoms (neurologic signs, seizures, difficulty breathing, or collapse) seek veterinary care immediately.

Can this cause illness in humans?
Yes, H5N1 can cause illness in humans. Current human infections have been linked to contact with infected cattle and wild birds. There is no current evidence of human to human transmission.

What is being done?
The CDC, FDA and USDA are closely monitoring cases as they develop. One voluntary product recall has been issued for contaminated raw food diets for cats & dogs. We are continuing to monitor this emerging virus.

The thing is, your dog knows when you’re sad, even when you try to hide it. They sense it in the way you move, in the quiet moments when your energy shifts. You don’t have to say a word; they pick up on it like it’s second nature. And when they know, they don’t ask questions, don’t push you to explain. They just come closer, sit beside you, and offer their presence.

It’s not about fixing anything, they know they can’t.
It’s about letting you know you’re not alone, that in their simple, unwavering way, they’re there for you.
Whether it’s resting their head on your lap or just sitting in the same room, your dog is tuned in to the things you think you’re keeping to yourself.
They know, and they stay, without expecting anything in return. It’s their way of loving you when you don’t have the words.

I recommend for your reading list- How Dogs Love Us by Gregory Berns. A neuroscientist wondered if he could prove that dogs love us. He writes about how the study began and the challenges of training dogs to not move inside of an MRI. A heartful story illustrating the lessons learned, the awakening of a new reality that includes dogs, and the changes in how the writer views leadership and relationships.

"The better analogy for being a pack leader comes from management literature. While there are different styles of leadership, the most important characteristics of a great leader are clarity and consistency."

"What are dogs thinking? The grand conclusion was this: they're thinking about what we're thinking. The dog-human relationship was not one-sided. With their high degree of social and emotional intelligence, dogs reciprocate our feelings toward them. They truly are First Friend."

For the first time, there is "direct evidence of reciprocation in the dog-human relationship and social cognition in the canine brain."

They love us, they have friends and enemies and they have just as a complex social world as ours.

Our Story

Advanced Animal Care was opened in 2001 by Drs. David & Leslie Steele to provide the Mount Pleasant community with quality veterinary services. To this day, our goal is to provide complete and compassionate medicine, surgery, and preventive care to pets of all ages, while building long lasting friendships with pet owners.

In 2011, Advanced Animal Care of Mount Pleasant became one of a select group of veterinary hospitals to be accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association. To be accredited by AAHA, our hospital must demonstrate an exceptional level of medical care and client service. AAHA’s standards cover every aspect of our hospital to assure your satisfaction with the level of care both you and your pet receives.

It is our mission to provide the most comprehensive care available to each of our patients and their people. We strive to provide in-depth client education, helping each client understand all aspects of pet health and preventative care, while emphasizing the importance of the human-animal bond. Our pets are beloved family members, and we are sure to treat them as such. We understand how scary the vet’s office can be, which is why we are all trained using Low Stress Handling techniques. Our goal is to earn your pet’s trust, and make sure they leave our office looking forward to their next visit.
