Hey guys it’s that time of the month where we are preparing for our monthly spay neuter clinic, and we really need our carriers back, TODAY! If you have adopted in the last month or two can you please look in your garage, your closets, or your basement to see if any of our cat carriers are stored there. Our name is on every one of them, we use the carriers for recovery.
If anyone has any hard sided, clean carriers that you could loan us we would be grateful if they were dropped off today between one and 6 PM. We will make sure they get labeled with your name so we can get them returned to you.

The four remaining babies from the Birth Canal litter are learning to eat wet food! This group is still a bit of a struggle bus and much smaller than they should be for their age, but because they did not get any colostrum from their mother and we do not know the mother’s health background, we are just happy they are progressing. The little tuxedo in the group is struggling hard so we’re very concerned but we will give it of course 100% effort. Send us good vibes that all four can grow up and be big happy healthy kitties. 💜🐈‍⬛
(they are being raised inside, we just had them out on our deck for a couple of minutes)

Here is some great info about “Free” kittens.
Couple of other bits of information that need to go along with this post:
1. Please be sure you are financially able to take on a pet. We run into this all the time, people adopt a cat and it comes down with an illness. Now they can’t afford to take care of it and they either want us to cover the cost post adoption, (sometimes many months after adoption), they write us bad reviews or they ditch the animal. And we always offer post adoption support, but we can’t help, if we don’t know there’s a problem. These are living beings and you have a responsibility to them which includes being financially stable to cover any emergency costs, and complete vet care.
2. When you adopt a cat from any shelter, the staff puts their heart and soul into these animals, volunteering lots of time and effort and would never purposely adopt out an ill cat. That would be counterintuitive! This is also a common bad review point. People adopt a cat from us, it’s been fully vetted, it looks great on the day it leaves. A week, month, a year later, it becomes ill and now they’re angry with us, writing bad reviews, etc. Cats are notorious for hiding illnesses, and despite putting over $150 or sometimes even thousands of dollars into one single cat, they do get sick! Do you really think we’re going to adopt out an animal that’s sick and spend all that time and money on them just for the hell of it? Of course not! And while our staff is paid, I, as the Director of the shelter am not, so it would not make sense to be throwing sick cats out the door just for fun. Rescue life is 24 seven and it’s a sacrifice we make because we CARE. There is zero profit in rescue! And a hundred dollar adoption fee is a darn great bargain for a fully vetted cat. We are 100% devoted and committed to every cat that goes through our facility. Every time we learn more, we always change our protocol for the good of the cats. And have we made mistakes through the years? Absolutely! Have we learned from them? Absolutely! So the next time you consider getting a free cat or even if you adopt from a shelter, please take these things into consideration. 🙂

If You Think Shelter Cats are Expensive, Wait Until You See the Price of a FREE One!

How many times have you seen a post like this?

Wanted Free Kitten -- We are a loving family and will be a great home for a kitten. We went to the shelter last week and they want $125 for a kitten! That is outrageous. Who can afford to pay that for a kitten? That is way beyond our budget, so we are hoping for a free kitten.

When I saw this post on NextDoor there were already several responses from people offering free or "inexpensive" kittens. One woman proudly claimed that she lets her cats have kittens as a "community service for people who can't afford the insane shelter adoption fees."

Are rescue and shelter adoption fees unreasonable? Several years ago, my coworker "Annie" chose to adopt a free kitten to save money. She knew I was involved in rescue and asked me for recommendations for affordable vaccines and altering. Annie was certain that a free kitten was going to save her a lot of money. Since money was very tight in her household, I had her make an appointment at Feral Cat Spay Neuter Project for the kitten's spay. The cost for spay, initial vaccines, microchipping and treatment for parasites were going to be only $100. A bargain! But she still needed combo testing and follow up rabies and FVRCP vaccines. That was going to add another $125 to her total. At $225, this was more than the adoption fee for a fully vetted kitten. But before she could take her in to be spayed her free kitten became very ill. She spent over $1,200 trying to save her life.

What are the costs in your community? In our area, adoption fees for fully vetted kittens tend to run between $100 and $150. This includes a wellness exam, age-appropriate vaccines, treatment for fleas and worms, spay / neuter, FIV / FeLV testing and microchipping.

We are fortunate to have low-cost options in our community, but most areas aren't so lucky. At a regular vet clinic, expect to pay $250 on the low end and up to $800 for more expensive clinics. If your free kitten has a common health issue like an upper respiratory illness, add $150 to $500 to your total. For a major medical issue, it could be thousands.

If you know someone interested in adding a kitten or two to their family, be sure to tell them that they can save money by adopting from a local shelter or rescue. If they are skeptical, encourage them to call their vet and find out the fees ahead of time. Free kittens contribute to the homeless cat population in our country because their uninformed adopters don't realize the costs of vet care. If you can't afford the adoption fee for a spayed and vaccinated kitten, you absolutely can't afford a free kitten!

These guys really, really need to find a home. Foster mom is doing an excellent job, but it is time for them to get adopted. Please share, they are very extra special kitties and they deserve a happy life!
We have three beautiful boys and their mom who are looking for a very special human to give them a safe, forever home. The tricky part is that all four are Feline Leukemia positive, which means they need homes with no other kitties. We would love to see them adopted together or in groups of two as all four are very social. They are also fully vaccinated, micro chipped, and fixed. They did not choose to be carriers of this virus and FELV kitties can have pretty normal lives with regular check ups, but their lifespan may be shorter due to the virus. There’s lots of great information out there about FELV, and these very sweet and loving kitties still deserve the best life they can get. We are willing to waive all adoption fees in order to get them into a committed home. Contact us directly if you want to do a meet and greet or have any interest in giving these guys the perfect home. (Mom is Oliver)

Unfortunately, we have a very sad update for our stray guy, Phoenix, found last weekend abandoned in someone’s yard. Despite multiple nights at our veterinary clinic with the best care, including fluids, antibiotics, and more, he has continued to decline, in fact, his numbers have worsened. This poor guy was an older kitty, already fixed that was failed by humans. We could not save him, but we have given him a dignified way to run free over the rainbow bridge. Even stray cat lives matter as they were once the beloved pet of someone that failed them. Thank you for sending your prayers and good vibes, sometimes our best still isn’t enough.
Rest in peace, sweet Phoenix. We are sorry that we could not save you but you deserve to be free from suffering.

What is Karma Kat Cafe?

I wanted to create a community setting, where humans and cats can interact in a serene atmosphere, and increase the odds of successful adoptions. By partnering with local shelters and rescues, we have created a valuable meeting space, and we provide an enriching, safe space for homeless cats. All adoptable cats are spayed or neutered and have required vaccinations.

How it works

  • 1. On-line reservations are available for an hourly fee. Walk-ins will are available, when slots are open. We have to maintain a purrfect cat-to-human ratio, so that everyone is comfortable.
