At Montgomery County Animal Shelter, we are committed to providing the best environment for the stray and unwanted pets of Montgomery County. We also take great pride in helping our community in any way we possibly can. We are a taxpayers funded community service, and we do our very best to be good stewards with YOUR tax dollars. Over the past couple of years, we have built relationships and partnerships that are vital to seeing our mission through!

Cara Achterberg (WhoWillLetTheDogsOut), Cathy Bissell(Bissell Pet Foundatio), Merck Animal Health, Home Again, Tractor Supply Company (Mt. Sterling), PetCo (Mt. Sterling), PetSense (Mt. Serling) Neogen Corp. (Mt. Sterling) and a host of Sponsers!

With great support from our local government leaders, law enforcement, as well as hard work and dedication, we are attaining that goal. We have big news coming up about a new partnership we have recently made, so stay tuned!

However, we would like to end this post with a happy announcement! In the year 2024, Montgomery County Animal Shelter had an overall intake of nearly 1000 animals. With help from local rescues such as Love Of Paws as well as Gateway Area Humane Society and most of all the gracious citizens of MoCo, we had a live rescue/adoption rate of 96%!

Folks, this is huge! Not many rural shelters can boast these kinds of numbers. So please give yourselves a pat on the back and remember to support your local animal shelter. If you're unable to adopt or foster, remember your donations, whether they're supplies or monetary, they go a long way to the care and re-homeing of these wonderful animals!

🐶 Meet Red – A Survivor Ready for Love! ❤️

Red’s journey is nothing short of incredible. When he arrived at the shelter on January 7, 2025, he was severely underweight at just 47 pounds, having been abandoned by his previous owners and left to fend for himself. But despite his rough past, Red has never lost his loving spirit.

Thanks to proper care, he has gained 60 pounds and is now thriving! He’s healthy, happy, and ready for a fresh start. Next week, Red will be neutered, fully vaccinated, and microchipped—all set to find his forever home.

This is JayJay he is 1 year 4 months and he came in today as a owner surrender. He can be adopted now . He is a Mountain Cur. He has had his shots and been heartworm tested which was negative. This is a handsome feller and is needing a loving home. Come in and visit Jay Jay and we can fill you in on anything you would want to know about JayJay. Adoption fee is $100 and that includes his neutering and microchipping.

Another success story today at our Shelter.Today Rosie our German Shepherd now called Mabel was fostered by a family and they came in today to adopt because she was such a wonderful fit for their family. Well between the tears I want to share with you the wonderful news that after 465 plus days Simba has his forever home! Simba has been at the shelter as long as I have since he was six months old and to say I’m going to miss him, well I will but he will lay his head on his bed tonight surrounded by a loving family. Every animal at the shelter is special but Simba kept getting overlooked but these folks came out said I want to see Simba he has been here to long. Long story short Simba’s cage will be empty tonight. Thank you for giving Simba a chance!
