Contained the remains of 5 known people including 2 Mexican American War vets and a Revolutionary War vet. I'll try and update a couple times a week with history on the people buried there, Wayne Township history, Mexican American War info/history or Revolutionary War history.

Sorry I have been absent. Finally got a chance to knock down the tall stuff. Big thanks to my wife for gathering up sticks and branches while I ran the weedeater. I'm hoping to get it back to how it was a couple years ago where I could almost push mow a good 75% of it.

The website, heistersmillcemetery.com is gone. It was getting to be too much money to keep for me. All the info is here for free anyhow.

Contained in the cemetery are  the remains an unknown amount of early Wayne Township, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania settlers. Some of the grave stones are for  John Graham, James Glasgow, Reuben Neice, Willis Copeland, and William Latherow. Others are mountain stones set on end marking possible gra...

Every now and again I try to find information related to either the cemetery or the people who are there. Now, I'm not sure if this is the area where it is located but there are ruins of a house, a barn and an orchard near there, or I think it was an orchard.

Sure glad I got out there today! It would have got out of control. Glad Connor came to help and nice to see Shawn today.

I'm wondering if William Latherow has relatives in the area. He was married to a Lydia McAninch, who was originally from the Shade Gap area. their children are as follows:
Mary Latherow, born 1825 - married Isaac Rohrer (Rorar)
Eleanor Latherow, born 1827 - married Robert Huskin (Huston)
William Latherow, born 1830 - married Catherine Enzbrenner
Catherine Latherow, born Feb 1835 - married Thomas J. Baird
Elizabeth Latherow, born July 1837 - married James Hughes
John Watson Latherow, born 9 Jan 1842 - marr Anna Isabel Ackley
Mary Ann Latherow born 1845 - married John Diffenbaugh
Andrew Jackson Latherow, born 10 Apr 1851 - marr Abby S. Kauffman

William Latherow, according to his death certificate, died on November 1st in 1854 of pneumonia. Other sources say October 31st of that year. His wife, Lydia, lived in Newton Hamilton with her son John until at least the 1880 census where she is listed as being 72 at the time.

With the river looking like it does, makes me think of all the floods we've had in the area. Anyone have pics of any floods in the past?

The headstone arrived today. Now I just need a good day to do it with the ground thawed. It weighs like 210 pounds so I'll need a hand or 4 loading it and placing it. It doesn't quite have all the info I listed but I'm sure there was a limit. Also, I did read an article how to located old gravestones that fell over and are buried so maybe there are other stones there that fell and got buried.

Happy New years!!

Update on the headstone... it will be arriving at my house on Thursday January 4th. Now we just need some decent weather to place it.

Not Wayne Township, but if you drive up to 22 towards Huntingdon and look right where you turn to go back to Mapleton you'll see what's left of the pilings for the old PA Canal aqueduct (think a bridge for boats, over a river). I just always thought that would have been something to see when it was working. Wayne Township has parts of the canal, right near Newton Hamilton and along Kistler Road. I'm sure there are other canal related spots in the township.

On this day in 1748 in Nantmeal Township, Chester County, (between Harrisburg and Philadelphia) John (Grimes) Graham was born. He served 3 years and 6 months during the Revolutionary war and fought in many battles. In 1790 he left Chester County and settled in Wayne Township, Mifflin County. I'm not sure the exact date he passed away but the last listing for him receiving a pension was in 1835, he was 86 years old. According to accounts, he signed his name John Grimes often. The history on Graham's going by Grimes is a story in itself. Happy Birthday and thank you for your service.

Reuben Neice's muster card from Mexico City. I found 8 of them from various dates. Some the name is spelled Niece or Neice or Nice.

I did some research on the 2 Mexican War vets. Reuben Neice was a member of the Wayne Guards. They were lead by Captain Caldwell. There was also an earlier unit called the Juniata Guards, Willis Copelin was a member of that unit. if you look close you'll see a David Copeland in the Wayne Guard. From what I have read Copelin/Copeland sort of swap around (much like Graham/Grimes). In another ebook I looked around in was the Commemorative Biographical Record of Central Pennsylvania, which covered, Clearfield county. There is a David Copelin in that book, who is had a younger brother named Willis who was in the Mexican War, enlisted in Lewistown PA or close to there, but then Willis went to California after enlisting for another 2 years then eventually died in Illinois. I'm wondering how he ended up buried in Heister's Mill cemetery or if they are different people all together. We might never know.
