Hellooo my fellow Cavie followers!! Just wanted to put a quick post up on how Kovach's Cavies came to be...so far...
We started with just one little piggie. One! Spike, a male, 5 years old. (Spike is the piggie in the profile picture 😉)
But this little lady 🙋♀️(the one writing this post) thought the old fella needed a mate. I mean, after all, guineas are, by nature, pack animals.
Soo..we found him a wife. 💁♀️
And they had babies!🐹..Did you know guinea pigs can start breeding at just 3 weeks of age? 'Cuz we sure didn't! 😳🤣
So we got another cage.🐹🐹
And another.🐹🐹🐹
Aaannd another.🐹🐹🐹🐹
Then we put up an outside pen.
Sweet! Now they have a fenced in yard to run around and play in.
And our herd kept growing. 🐹🐹🐹🤗🐹🐹🐹
Then a couple of males started fighting. Naughty buggers! As sweet as they are, they CAN fight very viciously!
So we got another pen. (We have done our research, but we are also learning as we go.)
Now, guinea pigs are prey animals. Meaning they are completely helpless and unable to resist attacks.
We have to be aware of our surroundings for them and that even includes the sky! Yes, we have had a few incidents where we had to ward off predators, but until recently, no big casualties.
Sadly, a few weeks ago, a dog escaped from a neighbor's fenced in yard and tore into one of my pens. It was so quick and our poor little piggies didn't stand a chance.
We had to do something. I personally was having issues leaving the rest of our piggies at all for fear of what would happen next!
So we placed an order for a small cottage shed to convert to a new home for them. (I will post a picture of the model we went with in the comments.) We are expecting our shed to be ready any day now and are excited to blog this journey with all of you!
So stay tuned to Kovach's Cavies for some upcoming video and livestreaming as we prepare the brand new Guinea Haven for our beautiful herd!
