I aim to raise awareness about GDV (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus, or "Bloat"), which our previous puppy "Falcon" recently experienced. Falcon, who now lives with one of our wonderful grooming clients, faced this scary situation last night. It's not something people anticipate, but it is a very real and serious condition. Falcon, at just 4 months old, underwent successful surgery and was able to cuddle with his momma afterward. ❤️

GDV stands for Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus, also known as bloat. It is a serious and life-threatening condition that occurs when a dog's stomach fills with gas, fluid, or food and then twists on itself. This twisting can cut off blood flow to the stomach and other organs, leading to rapid deterioration and potentially death if not treated promptly.

Poodles are one of the breeds that are at higher risk for GDV, along with other deep-chested breeds like Great Danes, Dobermans, and German Shepherds. Some factors that may contribute to GDV in poodles include eating too quickly, exercising immediately after eating, and stress or anxiety.

To prevent GDV in poodles, there are several steps that can be taken:

1. Feed multiple small meals throughout the day rather than one large meal.
2. Use a slow feeder bowl or puzzle feeder to slow down eating.
3. Avoid strenuous exercise or activity right after eating.
4. Do not allow your poodle to drink large amounts of water immediately before or after eating.
5. Avoid stress-inducing situations for your poodle.

To prevent bloat, I always feed my dogs 2 cups of food in the evening, and I add a small amount of water to their meals to prevent them from drinking excessively and potentially bloating. This also helps them stay hydrated. Throughout the day, my dogs always have access to water. We always play before mealtime, and in the evening after we settle down, they get to chow down.

Signs of GDV in poodles can include:

1. Unsuccessful attempts to vomit
2. Distended abdomen
3. Restlessness or pacing
4. Excessive drooling
5. Weakness or collapse
6. Rapid heart rate
7. Difficulty breathing

When it comes to tacking stomachs for GDV (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus, or "Bloat"), it is a surgical procedure called gastropexy. This procedure involves attaching the stomach to the abdominal wall to prevent it from twisting and causing bloat.

It is generally recommended to consider performing a gastropexy as a preventive measure for dogs who are at a higher risk of developing GDV, such as large or deep-chested breeds like poodles. This procedure can be done during a spay or neuter surgery or as a standalone procedure.

When considering whether to proceed with a gastropexy for your dog, it is important to consult with your veterinarian. Factors such as breed, size, age, and overall health should be carefully considered before making a decision. Your veterinarian can offer guidance tailored to your dog's specific risk factors and health condition.

If you notice any of these signs in your dog, it is crucial to seek immediate veterinary care as GDV is a medical emergency that requires immediate surgical intervention.
