Recent reports have brought our attention to news of a new respiratory disease in dogs causing severe sickness in those effected. Your pet's safety and well-being is our priority so please read further to get more information. As we learn more we will keep you updated.

At this time, we suggest being cautious but not panic.

The current recommendations are to decrease contact with other dogs (daycare, dog parks, public water bowls), ensuring they are up to date on vaccines and monitoring for :
Coughing
Sneezing
Nasal discharge
Rapid/ labored breathing
If your dog is experiencing a cough, it is recommended to have them seen as soon as possible. We ask that you wait in your car and call us when you arrive so we can bring you to our outside exam room and not potentially contaminate the lobby. You can take your dogs temperature at home if concerned; normal for dogs is 99.5-102.5, if the temperature is elevated and respiratory signs are seen please schedule an appointment. Historically we treat "kennel cough" with quarantining your dog until coughing has ceased and antibiotics if needed. However, we will likely recommend a PCR/culture swab to send to the lab so we know which virus or bacteria is affecting your dog and to help the state track these cases.

Vaccines:
We are updating our vaccine protocol to encourage bi-annual Bordetella Vaccines.
Bordetella is usually done annually so your dog may require a booster heading into the winter season to maximize their immunity. We are also encouraging Parainfluenza and Influenza vaccines annually. Parainfluenza is usually a component in the distemper/parvo combo vaccine. Influenza is not one of our core vaccines so this is the vaccine most dogs will likely require. We are ordering more vaccines to have available for those that would like to booster. We are unsure what this new sickness is but are hoping these 3 respiratory vaccines will help offer some protective immunity to our local canine community.

Location of cases:
The most recent update showed cases in Oregon, however, with the holidays looming we are concerned it may travel rapidly in coming months.

Our Story

In 2017, the Animal Care Center became part of the WellHaven PetHealth family.

We are very excited to announced that Dr. Leslie Kasper has joined our team full time. Dr. Kasper graduated from Washington State University in 2005. Since then she has worked in a variety of aspects of veterinary medicine including small animal clinical medicine, agricultural herd health, teaching veterinary technician students, and most recently animal welfare. Dr. Kasper’s favorite part about clinical medicine is interacting with the clients and partnering with them to provide the best care possible for their four-legged family members. She loves nutrition, behavior, soft tissue surgery, and dentistry. Outside of the hospital Dr. Kasper is active in a couple of local feline spay/neuter and rescue groups, enjoys all types of outside activities, rebuilding her enormous LEGO collection, and traveling with her family. At home, she and her husband have two Dachshunds (Piglet & Molly), three cats (Monkey, TuTu, and Asher), and a human toddler named Rory.

There are many exciting changes happening around the clinic. Please check back for updates.
