Happy National Dental Month! We are starting strong with a lesson on…
✨🦷 The Importance of Dental Radiographs🦷✨
This sweet dog presented Thursday for a dental cleaning with Dr. Jackie Burks, and his veterinary technician, Kristen. He had very mild tartar built up on the teeth, but upon completion of the dental radiographs, we found an unerupted baby tooth! (Circled in top picture)
This occurs sometimes when your pet’s baby teeth do not fall out, and in this boy’s case the permanent tooth never came in to push it out. Dr. Burks was able to extract this tooth because the dental radiographs allowed us to discover it was there when, to the naked eye, it was not visible in the mouth!
In addition, we get to find dental abnormalities! See the comparison photos above of this three-rooted lower premolar! It is supposed to have a single-rooted tooth in front of it (right behind the canine), but managed to join together to make one three-rooted tooth! ( Circled in the bottom picture) This abnormal tooth gets to stay, but is super helpful to have documented in case there are future problems with it!
Dental radiology is performed during each dental procedure by our highly skilled technicians! Call us at (205) 582-2013 if your pet needs their teeth professionally cleaned, and ask us about our dental discounts!
