I just snagged this image from another group. This shows the importance of socialization/desensitization that we breeders do, but it also shows what dogs, especially rescue dogs, could be afraid of. We humans take the world we live in for granted. This picture helps us see things from a dog's perspective. Imagine if you'd been stuck in a back yard, your entire life, never seeing anything else, and now you're placed in a new home, and your owner wants to take you for a walk. What a scary place the world would be! As a breeder, my family would carry puppies around the house, from the time their eyes and ears open, showing them things. Our house can be a wild and crazy place, so our puppies were pretty bomb proof by the time they left!

Is that what it's saying?

This is why it's so important to get your puppy from a reputable breeder! First off, fear has a powerful genetic component. Fearful dogs will likely produce fearful puppies. And, if the mother 'models' fearful behavior, puppies will learn it. In other words, even puppies that started off confident, if they see their mother running and hiding, or barking fearfully, they will learn that those things are 'bad', and be fearful as well. Even genetically sound puppies can become fearful if they aren't properly socialized by the breeder. Puppies need to be exposed to a wide variety of sights, sounds, and even smells while still at the breeders. This can be done through things like people wearing hats, glasses, coats, making noises, like using the blender, etc., so that the puppies learn that new, strange, or different are okay. It's even important for them to walk on different surfaces, like grass, concrete, gravel, carpet, tile, etc. And lastly, make sure your breeder uses positive reinforcement techniques on the mother and puppies. (No shouting at the puppies when they get into mischief!) And when you bring your puppy home, find a positive reinforcement trainer, too. All of this will help you have a happy, healthy, confident dog!

This is interesting. Several pet foods did NOT contain ingredients they claimed to, and many contained things they didn't list, including dog DNA!!
