UPDATE
SUFFOLK, VA (January 30, 2025) The Suffolk Police Department's Animal Control Division is continuing the investigation into alleged animal neglect in the 1200 block of Buckhorn Drive. Since Sunday, January 26, 2025, Suffolk Animal Control officers and a licensed, independent veterinarian have been working to investigate the matter and safely remove the horses from the properties. Transportation of the horses began on Tuesday, January 28 and is ongoing. The horses will be relocated to undisclosed rescue organizations and shelters within the Commonwealth of Virginia and will continue to receive veterinary care.

The investigation is ongoing at this time as Animal Control Officers continue to investigate this matter. The Suffolk Police Department's Animal Control Division is continuing to coordinate with the Commonwealth of Virginia's State Veterinarian as well as the Suffolk Commonwealth Attorney's Office.


The Suffolk Police Department would like to extend its gratitude to all rescue organizations, shelters, and rehabilitation facilities that have assisted with transportation or sheltering of the horses, as well as those organizations that have offered assistance.


As updates to this case continue, there will be additional information provided.

SUFFOLK ANIMAL CONTROL INVESTIGATES ANIMAL NEGLECT

The Suffolk Police Department's Animal Control Division has launched an investigation into allegations of animal neglect in the 1200 block of Buckhorn Drive. The investigation began on Sunday, January 26, 2025.

Multiple search warrants were obtained and executed at the property and nearby locations, all of which are owned by the same individuals.
During the investigation, officers discovered numerous horses on the property, including 22 horses suspected of neglect and six deceased horses in varying states of decomposition. The deceased horses have been transported to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services for necropsy.

Suffolk Police are collaborating with the Commonwealth of Virginia’s State Veterinarian and an independent licensed veterinarian to assess and treat all horses on the property. The Suffolk General District Court has ordered the impoundment of the remaining 22 horses, which will be removed once suitable boarding arrangements are secured.

The Suffolk Animal Control Division extends its gratitude to the community for their support but notes that donations are not needed at this time.

The Suffolk Animal Control Division, in coordination with the Suffolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, is leading the investigation.

This is an active and ongoing investigation, and no further details are available at this time.
