Ok, so I keep seeing on FB sites ppl that obviously don't know the difference between a backyard breeder or puppy mill. I'm probably going to hurt some feelings but it needs to be addressed because ppl swear they aren't backyard breeders but they actually ARE. So here we go!
A backyard breeder is ANYBODY that has a purebred dog that breeds it to another purebred dog of the same breed or different breed and sells the pups for profit. A backyard breeder usually doesn't know anything about breeding, doesn't know anything about the bloodline of the dogs they're breeding and cannot answer basic questions like "what color will the pup be as an adult"? Why? Because they are just letting 2 purebred dogs screw to make pups not knowing where the dogs originally came from. They might have bought a shih tzu and later got a poodle and decided it was a good idea to breed them to make some extra money. They will not be able to offer you info because they simply don't know. They probably work actual 9-5 jobs, They do not breed as a full time job, won't be available for the birth so they will just come home to puppies in a closet or under there bed somewhere. They want to breed because they think it will be "fun" they want to make some extra cash since there dogs ARE purebred. They say "I just want my kids to experience a litter of puppies". They just want to breed and sell to there "friends and family". They don't offer any health guarantee, contract, health record or after care advise. They just breed a few times before they end up realizing it's too much and fix there dogs. They won't have a extra $4000 sitting around in case an emergency happens with the pregnancy. They might have a Chihuahua and breed it to a shih tzu, call it a Chi-shih and call it a designer dog and try to charge full price with no registration. They will not be able to answer any questions, probably just posts the pups at 8 weeks when they're ready to go, meets you in a Foodlion parking lot, gets the money and you never hear or see them again in your life. They have no reputation as a breeder of any certain breed because they are not a true breeder that does this for a living!.
Now puppy mills......
A puppy mill will have a variety of dogs and mixes at all times, ages and stages.
They usually WILL have Akc or CKc registration and are registered as a kennel breeder. You have to be registered as a akc kennel breeder when you have like 30-40 ADULT breeding dogs at a time or more. They are loosely monitered, sell to pet stores, and will also usually meet you, ship the pup or fly the pup to you at a extra cost of course. No after purchase inquiries because they made the sale and they don't really care what happens after the pup is sold. They also ask the most $$ because of the registration but the dogs are poorly cared for, kept in cages, not socialized and have health or behavior issues because how they were kept before ever being sold. AKC dogs are the biggest, worst puppy mills usually ! They might even have a lot of designer mixes because they probably don't really know who or what is breeding at any time. A lot of in**ed pups are born in puppy mills. How do you know who is breeding with 40-50 dogs running around in a seperate facility that you visit maybe once a day or week? A lot of health issues and potty training issues with these pups because in**ed dogs have learning difficulties. Nasty living conditions, pregnant moms are not cared for properly during pregnancy which can cause issues in the pups as soon as they're born
If you made it to the end of this thank you! Lol I just had to get this off my chest !
If you got butt hurt reading this you are probably a backyard breeder.
I 👏said, 👏what👏 I 👏said! 💁
P.S. All you wanna be backyard breeders need to stop acting like what I do is "easy money" that anybody can do. It is Not, nor is it Cheap to do what I do! I've spent over 20k of my money on my dogs for fencing, safe enclosures, meds, vet bills, grooming equipment, bedding, puppy pads, vaccines, heating pads, food ect ect on top of my customer service time that I Don't get paid for, sleepless nights staying up with my mommas that are laboring, saving puppies that are born but momma is too exhausted to clean up and get breathing, supplementing pups that are too weak to suckle on there own, helping pull out a pup when the mom is having a hard time pushing it out on her own and you see she is getting exhausted because I AM THERE FOR HER throughout the whole process and to help her! WE ARE NOT THE SAME!
Have a great weekend!
