The New Year is just a few days away! Here are our top pet safety tips so you can welcome in 2024 as safely as pawsible:

-Keep all pets indoors
-Make sure pets have an ID and are chipped
-Keep human food and alcohol away from your pet, and relay to any guests of this as well
-Keep your pet in a cozy area with music or a TV on. These sounds help to drown out any party noises and/or fireworks.

Did you know that most pets see muted colors?

While dogs can’t see the same array of colors that humans can, they can discern between yellow and blue (making them red-green color blind).

When choosing your pet’s holiday gift this year, maybe opt for a yellow or blue toy! 🔵

Performed at least once a year, blood work panels help us assess your pet’s overall health. Diagnostic labs give us an inside look at how your pet’s liver and kidneys are functioning and help track any changes in their health.

Canine Respiratory Illness Medical Alert

A new dog respiratory illness is spreading quickly across the United States. There has been some discussion on the news regarding this new condition. The cause is suspected to be viral similar to flu or kennel cough but more severe illnesses are developing. It typically starts with a cough that doesn't improve with antibiotics and can develop into severe pneumonia very quickly in some pets. We recommend avoiding dog parks, boarding facilities, and any opportunity for nose to nose contact with other dogs to help stop the spread until the illness is better understood and contained. Ensure your pet is up to date on all vaccinations and keep in touch with us if your pet develops a persistent cough or concerns of respiratory illness.

We are now offering Orthopedic consults/surgeries with Dr Johnson at our hospital. Here is what she has to share about her new journey in Orthopedics...

As a long time vet at MAH, I am always excited to add to my skillset to be able to offer new services to benefit our patients. I have always really enjoyed surgery and dentistry. Over the past year I have gone through training and mentoring and can now offer our patients Extracapsular Repair (ExCap) of Ruptured ACLs, as well as medially luxating patellar surgery (through imbrication, trochlear wedge resection and/or tibial tuberosity transposition). I participated in an intensive hands on course and have been receiving mentorship from a local veterinarian to hone my skills. I didn’t want to offer services until I was sure I could do them to my high standards. The local orthopedic surgical specialists are always available for referral, but now I can offer a more convenient, less costly alternative.

These orthopedic procedures are in addition to the advanced soft tissue surgeries that I already offer, including abdominal exploratories, gastrotomies and enterotomies for GI foreign bodies; gastropexy or stomach tacking to prevent GDV/bloat in susceptible deep chested breeds; splenectomy (spleen removal); enucleation (removal of eye); a**l sacculectomy (a**l sac removal); cystotomies (bladder surgery to remove stones); mastectomies (mammary gland removal for tumors); various skin tumor excisions; and more. I also routinely perform surgical dental extractions.

Please call (847)566-5750 for more information about any of these surgeries or to schedule a consult with me. Right now, we have a few surgical openings on November 17 where two surgeons would be attending to your pet.
