What a ways little Clarence has come! Remember this sweet senior, who could barely walk he was so overgrown and matted when we pulled him from animal control?

Now, we know that this 11-year old Maltese mix loves nothing more than being held and snuggled, making him the perfect lap dog. Treats and quality time with his people are among his favorite things, and he’s wonderfully calm, spending much of his day napping peacefully. Clarence gets along well with other dogs and is perfectly comfortable sharing space with them.

It seems as though we have been inundated with severely neglected dogs recently. Yesterday’s relinquishes were just horrific.

We received a call from a family who wanted us to take their two dogs in because they no longer wanted them. We asked the family to bring them over to our facility in Mundelein. Just ten minutes later, the family called back and said that they would not bring them to us and that we would have to come and get the dogs from them. Something seemed off about this conversation and we were very concerned for the welfare of these dogs. Two of our directors jumped into action and drove out to Antioch to assess the situation.

When we arrived at the home, the owner would not allow us to enter and told us to wait on his front step while he got the dogs. A couple of minutes later, the front door opened and through an opening on their storm door, the gentleman reached out holding one of the dogs by the back of it’s tattered sweatshirt as if he was passing over a bag of trash. One of our directors rushed forward to grab the dog and safely took it to her vehicle. The gentleman retreated back into the house and once again returned with his hand cupping the underside of a second tiny dog. She was safely taken to the vehicle while the owner signed over the unwanted dogs into our care.

When asked the dog’s names and how old they were, the family was unable to give us a consistent answer. We were even told that one of the dogs was never given a name. How can it be that two little helpless souls could be left so badly neglected as if they were inanimate objects tossed to the side, forgotten?

We are very grateful that our directors knew something was amiss and went out to the home, getting the dogs to safety. A humane Investigator has been contacted and is helping us further investigate the situation. In the meantime, we have named these two sweet souls, Ajax and Alvara. Ajax means Greek warrior and Alvara means elf warrior. Alvara weighs just 3.38 lbs and Ajax weighs 7 lbs.

Both dogs are very skinny and have wounds from the matts that gripped so tightly to their skin. They will receive all the care that they so deserve while in our program. Please watch our page for further updates as Ajax and Alvara settle in.
