I know we have people on both sides of the argument on this page. That is not what this post is for. I have been studying merle since our last litter that had merle. Merle carries no more health issues than any other colors if the breeder is not responsible. No one can find where the merle first started in poodles and so I am more inclined to agree that it was hidden and culled in poodle lines. Same as so many of the other colors we know and love. With red, cream, apricot, white, and sable all hiding the merle gene it would be easy when breeding many generations of red to then outcross to a different color and end up with new colors, phantom, merle, sable, and brindle. Parti was even culled for years. Merle is here to stay in poodles and I may breed some merles as they are beautiful dogs and a lot of them have better and more stable temperaments than I have found in some other colors. In saying that I will always genetic test my breeders to make sure we don't double merle. If you have questions or just want to talk about our dogs or yours please message me. I am always up for talking about dogs. And I hope you all have a great day.
