🐾Updated Canine Leptospirosis Guidance from the AVMA🐾

Leptospirosis, a bacterial disease that affects both pets and humans, is more common than many realize. The AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) has provided updated guidance about this potentially dangerous disease. Learn more at https://www.avma.org/resources-tools/pet-owners/petcare/leptospirosis

Why should you care?
--Zoonotic Component: Leptospirosis can be transmitted from pets to people, making it critical to protect everyone in your family.
-Risk of Exposure: Leptospirosis bacteria thrive in wet environments, like puddles, rivers, and ponds, and can be spread through wildlife urine. Here in Murfreesboro, these conditions are common, putting our pets at increased risk.

💉 The Importance of Vaccinating:
Leptospirosis is preventable with timely vaccinations. Ensuring your dog is protected helps keep them healthy and reduces the risk to you and your loved ones. If your dog hasn’t been vaccinated or you’re unsure of their vaccination status, call us today at Happy Paws Veterinary Center to schedule an appointment.

🐾 Patient Spotlight:
Two of our recent patients diagnosed with leptospirosis are doing remarkably well after receiving care. Their recovery highlights the importance of quick action by their owners and the value of prompt, effective treatment. These cases serve as a strong reminder of how vital prevention measures, like vaccination, are in protecting our pets.

📞 Take Action Today:
Call us at (615) 603-7192 to discuss leptospirosis prevention and how we can keep your pet safe.

Meet Indigo!

Indigo, a spirited 6-month-old Corgi with short legs and a big personality, was recently spayed at Happy Paws Veterinary Center.

Spaying provides essential health benefits for pets, such as preventing uterine infections like pyometra, reducing the risk of certain cancers, and minimizing the likelihood of specific behavioral challenges.

Did you know that most pets are ready for spaying or neutering around six months of age? However, timing can vary depending on the breed and individual health needs. Our team can help you determine the best time for your pet.

Indigo will be taking it easy for the next 10-14 days while she heals. With proper post-operative care, including rest and limited activity, she'll be back to her playful self in no time!

Spaying and neutering are vital steps in promoting your pet’s health and well-being while supporting responsible pet ownership.

Have questions or want to schedule an appointment? Call us today!

Meet Reggie, a 6-year-old Rat Terrier, who came to us after his owner noticed blood in his urine (a condition called hematuria). During his exam, we found a bladder stone on his radiographs, which was causing him discomfort. Today, Reggie underwent a cystotomy—a surgery to remove the stone from his bladder. 🏥

We’re happy to report that Reggie’s surgery went smoothly, and he’s now recovering comfortably. In about 10-14 days, he should be back to his usual self! 🐶✨

We’ll be sending Reggie’s stone off to a lab to determine its type. This is an essential step, as knowing the stone's composition helps us tailor Reggie’s diet to reduce the chance of more stones forming.

Did you know? Bladder stones can form in pets due to imbalances in their urine, often caused by genetics, diet, or infection. Here are some signs to watch for: 🔸 Frequent urination 🔸 Blood in the urine 🔸 Straining or inability to urinate

If you notice any of these symptoms in your pet, don’t wait to get them checked! Early diagnosis and treatment are key to keeping them comfortable and healthy.
