With avian influenza on the rise, Family Pet Health has protocols in place for managing suspected infections. While there are no known cases of this illness being transferred from cat to human at this time (only cattle and bird transmission to humans thus far), we encourage cat owners to take special attention ensure the health and safety of our pets and their human caretakers. Learn how to protect your pets here:

Since the U.S. outbreak of avian influenza A (H5N1) in dairy cattle began in March 2024, dozens of cats are known to have contracted the virus, including barn and feral cats, indoor cats, and big cats in zoos and in the wild (e.g., mountain lions, tigers, leopards, and bobcats).
