Celebrate Animal Shelter Appreciation Week!
The first week of November is a special time to recognize the amazing work of animal shelters. These shelters provide a safe haven for animals who are abused, neglected, lost, or abandoned, and they play a key role in promoting responsible pet ownership. They also offer valuable services like low-cost vaccines and spay/neuter programs to keep pets healthy.

Shelters are more than just a place to find your next furry friend—they're essential to building a compassionate community. When you adopt from a shelter, you’re often welcoming a pet who has already received vaccinations or has been spayed/neutered, making the process even smoother.

We’re especially grateful for our partnership with local shelters. Many of the incredible dogs in our service program come from shelters, and they have so much to offer! If you're thinking of adding a new companion to your family, consider visiting your local shelter. You could find your next best friend while supporting an important cause!

We are excited to announce our Wag and Walk in celebration of our 35th anniversary at Canine Support Teams! This year, our goal is to raise $35,000 and collectively walk 3,500 miles to honor our journey and the incredible impact we’ve made over the years.
All board members and staff are participating by setting personal goals for both the miles they walk and the funds they raise.
The Wag and Walk event not only serves as a fundraiser, but also as a celebration of the incredible bond between humans and their canine companions. We invite you to join us as we walk, wag, and raise funds to support our mission of providing service dogs to veterans and individuals with disabilities. Your participation will help us train and place more service dogs, ensuring that those in need receive the life-changing support they deserve.
We hope you will join us in making this year’s Wag and Walk a resounding success by supporting our mission to empower individuals through the companionship of trained service dogs.

🎉🎊🎉Today, we proudly celebrate our founder, Carol Roquemore, on her birthday!

As a child, Carol learned to overcome challenges and accomplish what seemed impossible. Her journey through adversity inspired a lifelong mission: to help others gain independence. With incredible tenacity, Carol turned that vision into reality by founding Canine Support Teams. Thanks to her determination, we have spent the past 35 years empowering people with disabilities to lead independent lives through the partnership of service dogs.

🎉🎊🎉Carol, today we honor you on your special day. May this birthday mark the start of your best year yet!🎉🎊🎉

Puppy Raisers are the heart of Canine Support Teams—without them, our mission wouldn't be possible! We’re thrilled to expand our efforts with the new Prison Puppy Raiser program, where prison employees can now become puppy raisers. This innovative program lets employees bring service dogs in training to work, with the help of inmate puppy sitters. This collaboration not only boosts the number of puppy raisers but also gives more inmates the chance to develop valuable skills as skilled handlers.

Our Prison Pup Program has long provided advanced training for our dogs, while empowering inmate trainers. Now, with employees joining as raisers, we’re able to offer even more opportunities for both people and pups!

As we prepare to welcome 6-8 new puppies in the coming weeks, we’re always looking for more puppy raisers to join this amazing journey. Want to make a difference? Visit our website today to learn more and apply!

Thank you to Angel City Sports for inviting us to participate at the Courage Games Saturday and Sunday, October 19-20. Based in Los Angeles, Angel City Sports provides adaptive sports programs throughout the year. Courage Weekend brought together ill, injured, and disabled veterans and first responders to connect through sport. Pickleball, swimming, wheelchair basketball and fencing, and so many other sports were available for participants.
We are thankful to have had the opportunity to connect with so many people including a couple of our own dogs and their handlers. Being able to participate and meet so many people was great. More so, watching them all overcome the challenges they face and succeed was remarkable. We are excited to see what Angel City Sports accomplishes in the future and look forward to an ongoing relationship with them.

On Wednesday, we wear pink!

In the United States, 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. While it’s widely known that women are at higher risk, nearly 1% of all new breast cancer cases are in men.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this year, we are proud to partner with a local Riverside County testing facility to provide financial assistance to those in need. Together, we can make a significant impact by promoting awareness and encouraging early detection.

The Importance of Testing
Early detection through regular screenings, breast self-exams, and mammograms is crucial in the fight against breast cancer. These practices lead to earlier diagnoses, more effective treatment options, and ultimately, better outcomes. By supporting testing initiatives, we are taking proactive steps to save lives and empower our community.

Please contact us to learn more about financial assistance for preventative screening.

We're thrilled to share that the new puppies we received last week are starting to settle into their new homes! Hunter is with Deborah and Tommy in Florida, and we know he’ll have plenty of adventures with them.

A huge thank you to Deborah and Tommy for helping us raise a service dog. Your support is essential to our mission, and we couldn't do it without you! We can’t wait to hear more about Hunter’s journey.

The United States Navy traces its origins back to October 13, 1775, when the Continental Congress passed a resolution to establish a naval force. In 1972, Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt, then Chief of Naval Operations, formally recognized October 13 as the U.S. Navy's birthday, celebrating the establishment of the service and its long history of protecting the United States' maritime interests.

On the Navy’s 249th birthday, we honor those who have served and take a moment to recognize the partnerships we have witnessed between sailor and service dog. Angela and Scotty were matched earlier this year. Angela shares her experience with scotty:

“I want to express my deepest gratitude for the life-changing gift of my service dog, Scotty. As a Navy veteran, I’ve faced challenges with PTSD, anxiety, stress, and balance issues, but Scotty has been my guardian angel through it all. His support gives me stability, peace, and comfort, allowing me to live with more confidence and control.
On this Navy birthday, I reflect on my service and how Scotty has become my battle buddy in this new chapter of life. His presence has not only impacted me but has brought peace and unity to my entire family. We are truly blessed to have him in our lives. Thank you, CST, for making this incredible journey possible. Scotty has given me a sense of balance and joy that I never thought I’d experience again.”

Thank you, Angela, for sharing your story. Our goal is to provide service dogs to support the personal, social, and occupational independence of those with disabilities.

🦮 NEW PUPPIES HAVE ARRIVED! 🦮

On Tuesday, October 8, we welcomed four new golden retriever puppies! These puppies will play a vital role in changing lives, one service dog at a time.

Their journey to us may have been long, but they experienced so much along the way—new sights, sounds, smells, their first crowds, and even their first plane ride. Willow, Hunter, Meadow, and Scout handled it all like pros, and we’re excited to watch them grow into incredible service dogs.

These puppies are now being placed with their puppy raisers: one is headed to Florida, one to Washington, and two will stay with local raisers. Puppy raisers are essential to what we do, and without them, we couldn’t meet the growing need for service dogs.

We expect to receive 6-8 more puppies by the end of the year and are actively looking for puppy raisers to help meet the demand. Raising a puppy is a rewarding way to make a difference in the life of someone in need.

If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a puppy raiser for our next group, please visit https://caninesupportteams.org/puppy-raisers/. Together, we can change lives!

🐶🦮Puppy raisers are the heart of Canine Support Teams. Without them, service dogs wouldn’t exist, and those in need of these life-changing dogs wouldn’t have access to them.

Marina, one of our newer puppy raisers, is currently raising Reno. She shares, “Raising a service puppy has been such a rewarding experience. Reno is an incredibly bright little guy and will undoubtedly enrich someone’s life. Our family, including our lab Murphy, has loved every moment with him. If you’re considering becoming a puppy raiser, I highly recommend it. It’s been a true joy for all of us.”

The more puppy raisers we have, the more dogs we can train, and the more people we can serve. If you’re interested in raising a puppy for Canine Support Teams, visit our website: caninesupportteams.org/puppy-raisers ❤🦮

The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) hosts an annual service and therapy animal training event, inviting trainers, program alumni, and their friends to gather at the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center for valuable socialization, networking, and hands-on training. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the event.

Participants practice working in crowded areas, riding elevators, and using bus lifts. They board buses and travel to Disney Garden or Downtown Disney, where the dogs are exposed to a variety of sights, sounds, smells, people, and environments. During this experience, our dogs learned to use the bus lift, navigated through crowded stores, encountered dancing fountains, and interacted with numerous other dogs.

We are incredibly grateful for this opportunity, which allows us to provide our dogs with a wide range of experiences. Thank you to OCTA for organizing this event and helping so many organizations expand their training programs.

We love our puppy raisers!

Well-raised puppies are the heart of our organization. Without the dedication of our puppy raisers, none of what we do would be possible.

As a volunteer puppy raiser, you'll have the opportunity to teach a puppy how to love, trust, and be brave, along with basic obedience and socialization. The best part? You can take the puppy just about everywhere you go in your daily life! Whether it's a date night, a movie, or traveling by plane, train, or bus, the puppy comes with you.

Since puppies learn so much during their first year, you'll also connect with other puppy raisers during specialized training sessions and group outings. Together, you'll help teach your puppy everything they need to know to succeed.

By becoming a puppy raiser, you'll provide the essential foundation a puppy needs before moving on to formal service dog training. Ready to make a difference? Visit our website and complete a puppy raiser application. We'll support you every step of the way. It's a deeply rewarding experience to watch a puppy grow into a skilled service dog, working seamlessly with a disabled handler.
