Mistnstone Canine Companion Rescue

Mistnstone Canine Companion Rescue Located in SW Pa, We have no physical shelter and all adoptions are by appointment only in one of our loving foster homes. We aren't beyond helping mixes!

We are a small rescue and not yet 501c3 but working on it. Please see "About" for FOSTERING info! We are mostly made up of a few friends and family members who volunteer their time to help, but because we have no physical shelter, we are unable to house dogs in need, and we work in the best way that we can to save them. This means until we have a foster ready, we can't save a dog from a kill shelt

er situation! Formerly known as Mist`nStone Labrador Retriever Rescue Group, we do NOT just rescue Labs any longer, but any dog that exhibits the great temperament we see in labs. We can't pull a dog until we have a foster home, so if you're in SW Pa and interested in becoming a foster parent, please let us know! We try our best to save unwanted companion quality dogs in pounds, kill shelters and from individuals who request we "take" or help them place their pet. We work at getting them into foster homes, and preparing them for a loving forever home. While our main focus is saving the companion pets currently sitting on death row in kill shelters across the United States, we would not be able to do this without people who want to adopt them! We look for what we consider a companion quality pet that has great attitude, temperament and characteristics, regardless of the breed. Some of the best dogs are mixed! We are limited in our work with Pits but have been known to live with, and rescue a few. We seek out and welcome families and individuals looking for a indoor family companion, and do what we can to ensure you find a great match that will happily fit into your life! Most of our matches are pulled directly from high kill shelters, or people giving up their pet, however many of the dogs in our program will have spent time with one of Mist`nStone’s foster families as well! We are ALWAYS seeking qualified foster homes! Please send us a PM today if you're interested in becoming a foster family!

Some dogs are smarter than others and SEEM stubborn. They just need more patience! It's always human error!

Some dogs are smarter than others and SEEM stubborn. They just need more patience! It's always human error!

I’M NOT STUBBORN! I’M JUST NOT MOTIVATED….
Not providing enough motivation plays a big role, but there are many other reasons that a dog’s behaviour may look like a dog is just being stubborn.
What looks like stubbornness is often a reaction to something else that is going on, on an emotional, mental, physical, environmental or genetic level. While dogs experience a range of emotions, choosing to be stubborn is not part of that range.
The label of “stubborn” is really not fair. It’s often used as an “acceptable excuse” to explain away a behaviour. It removes any pressure on us to find the root cause because we have labelled it. Just like us, dogs do what works for them and when they’re not doing what we want, there is usually a valid reason.
Perhaps it’s because they associate that behaviour with something aversive, perhaps they don’t understand what we’re wanting, they’re too distracted, over excited, tired, feeling stressed, or in pain. It’s our responsibility as the supposedly more intelligent species to figure out why. Our relationships with our dogs should be based on understanding - a cooperative partnership and not a dictatorship.
Be consistent in always rewarding behaviours you’re looking for with lots of positive reinforcement to build motivation. When a dog knows that a particular behaviour will be rewarding it will result in a dog being motivated instead of "stubborn".
The wellbeing of our dogs will be far better when we stop calling them “stubborn” and learn how to help them be more responsive.

PREDICTABLE PATTERNS AND WHY THEY MATTER
We can help our dogs to cope in our world by providing predictable patterns that they can follow, even when the unpredictable happens. This requires consistency, repetition and patience, but dogs quickly learn what to do when that behaviour creates a predictable, positive result.
Predictability lowers anxiety, allows the brain to conserve energy and creates a sense of trust and security. Like other animals, dogs are experts at finding patterns. They look for patterns in their world and in the behaviour of others and just like we do, feel so much better when they can make sense of a situation rather than feeling confused or anxious when they can’t find a pattern.
When we create predictable patterns, dogs begin to understand what happens and how they should respond when a specific situation occurs. The situation becomes the cue for the behaviour rather than the cue itself. We often get caught up in using cues instead of just showing our dogs that this is what they should do in this situation. Being consistent and following a pattern with our dogs, creates trust, stability and security in helping them to know what to expect.

Whose walk is it?

WHOSE WALK IS IT ANYWAY?
Imagine going on a long-anticipated walk, through new scenery and enticing scents after being cooped up in the same place all day, but you have been fitted with a blind fold and are being dragged or yanked along at a quick pace.

I imagine that this is how dogs feel when we don’t allow them time to stop, sniff and explore the environment. Dogs largely perceive their world through scent and it’s how they collect and process information and make sense of the world.

Taking away an opportunity for sniffing on a walk really isn’t fair and as much as physical exercise is important, the mental stimulation that sniffing provides is equally, if not more important.

Allowing dogs to choose when to stop and sniff provides so many benefits – increases self-confidence, promotes calmness, lowers stress and anxiety levels, lowers pulse rates, reduces cognitive decline in older dogs and provides important mental and environmental enrichment.

Make time for a slow sniffing walk when you can, where your dog is allowed to choose which direction to go and allowed time to just investigate, interpret the environment and follow wherever their nose leads them.

It may take far more time and patience as we wait for them to finish smelling that particular blade of grass, but the benefits are well worth it – after all, whose walk is it anyway?
