Important update on equine herpes virus in our area. The neurologic form of EHV-1 was initially confirmed in the Hillsboro and Tomah regions, but we have confirmed at least 2 and 1 more suspect case of EHM (equine herpes myeloencephalopathy) just outside of Muscoda.
EHV-1 can show up as respiratory disease (most commonly in the young and old), late term abortion in pregnant mares, and as the neurologic form, EHM.
It is very important that you practice good biosecurity on your property. Do not allow strange horses to come into contact with your own, specifically nose-to-nose contact. The disease can be spread by you if you come into contact with the respiratory secretions of an infected horse, so please wash your hands and avoid contact with strange horses yourself.
You can vaccinate your herd, and it is recommended, but the vaccine is not effective for the neurologic form of the disease.
The link below will go into further details about the disease and biosecurity measures. This article was created only four days ago and already multiple more cases of the neurologic form have been confirmed.
One horse in Vernon County, Wisconsin, is positive for EHV, and two additional horses are suspected positive.
