This is probably one of the best heat index charts I have encountered. This is good information for the hot days ahead.

Heat and humidity have returned to the Midwest! Horses can acclimate to hot and humid weather conditions; however, air temperature and relative humidity can affect your horse’s ability to cool themselves.

It is recommended to avoid (or use caution when) riding or exercising a horse when the combined air temperature (in Fahrenheit) and relative humidity (%) surpass 150. For example, if the temperature is predicted to be 92 F with 69% relative humidity, the combination of the two is 161.

When the air temperature + relative humidity is less than 130, horses are very effective at cooling themselves. Between 130 and 150, a horse’s ability to cool themselves is decreased. When the combination is greater than 150, a horse’s ability to cool themselves is greatly reduced, and if the combination is greater than 180, conditions could become fatal if the horse is stressed.

We are so thankful for all the extra hands around the farm. In the past few days we have picked up three surrender horses and are turning one of them into a therapy prospect with the help of a volunteer. We have had volunteers working on equipment and helping with multiple tasks around the farm. The extra efforts these people are putting in is being rewarded with ride time and education in all things equine. I'm so very thankful for our volunteers!

We had the help of several awesome volunteers last night to do some big time clean up at the farm. Things just keep getting better every day. Thanks to the three young men & board member that worked on cleaning the lean-to and to our chainsaw & tractor operator and horse holders/gate tenders that helped with tree removal and oh yeah the two guys that put some time on Stormy to assure she is ready for lessons.
You all bring something to the table and last night it was a banquet!!

Don't forget! We are happy to accommodate lessons for the therapy program as well as both English and Western disciplines. With 5 instructors on staff it is certain that one of us can meet the needs.

It's going very exciting day tomorrow. The delivery of the picnic tables & benches for people and the bridges for horse training will be delivered in the early afternoon. There's lots of work to be done here to get ready for the Easter egg hunt which will be on April 16th. We are looking forward to making this a beautiful place to be enjoyed by all.

Tonight let's introduce Miggy. He was a private surrender to Points North Horse Rescue a couple of years ago. He had been hanging around waiting for an opportunity for a purpose just so long as he doesn't have to take a trailer ride. He is a smooth moving big machine and ready to go to work in the therapy program.

It was so nice to hear people having such a good time in the barn this afternoon! I love the diversity. Who says you can't rope and drag a barrel in an English saddle? One more week to gear up and get ready for therapy and open lessons to start. I can hardly wait!

Today let's introduce Bear or as he is formally known, Barely An Echo. He is a registered Morgan gelding that was a private surrender to Points North Horse Rescue a couple of years ago. His owner was working long hours and wanted him to have more attention. He was a champion saddle seat horse at the Branch County Fair and is currently a mount for the Muskegon County Sheriff's Mounted Unit. He is a big sturdy fellow and will be a wonderful addition to the therapy program.

Today let's meet Helga. She is a beautiful quarter horse mare that came from a severe neglect case in 2018. She has made a full recovery, attended the county fair and has been trained and certified as a mount for the Muskegon County Sheriff's Mounted Unit. She will now be taking her place in the therapy program while continuing her public service.

There are so many skills that a horse and rider team can accomplish. Here is one of our young boarders learning how to rope an object. She has a goal of participating in some youth rodeo action and is being coached to follow her dream.

01/08/2022

We have gotten off to a good start in our first month managing the facility. Lots of positive changes have been made and many more ahead. New boarders have been added and a fresh group of lesson and therapy horses will be arriving soon. We are also kicking off "Open Arena" allowing haul in for riding time in the indoor arena. Stay tuned as we post events and schedules in the near future!
