Today is going to be especially brutal! Please read the above post. Consider avoiding exercise in the hottest part of the day, offer electrolytes and plenty of fresh water!
(And don’t forget to drink yourselves!)
Sound Up Abscess
Well, if that’s not the most satisfying sound I’ve ever heard, I don’t know what is!
Happy (abscess) Wednesday!!
Follow up from the post last week (sorry for the delay!)
This wound is a GREAT example of how any full thickness wound over a joint should be investigated by a vet. Luckily, this wound wasn’t deep enough to affect any of the joints, but it did nick the extensor tendon sheath. Luckily, these can be treated medically without surgical intervention in most cases, but if we had just ignored it & treated it topically there’s a very good chance it could’ve become quite infected.
If you are EVER unsure, send us a picture picture! We will know immediately whether or not it’s something that warrants further investigation!

Love a good slurpy sounding mash! Sound up!
We’ve been loving this new product from @purina - Replenimash.
Great option for hydration and electrolytes on these really cold days. Also a great option to restart feeding after a colic episode.

Dr. Sams is now accepting porcine patients!!
(Kidding, kidding!!!!! But they are super cute 🐷)
The piece of tissue is from a Sinus flush!!! 🤢😄
That tissue is likely either inspissated pus or a piece of sinus lining that has been infected, and sloughed due to infection.
Either way, this horse is feeling MUCH better!!! This is the horses version of a Neti-pot!! 😂
Kelly Beach was the first correct guess!
Good job everyone!!
Warning: gross!!!
If anyone can guess the origin of this piece of tissue, a PenMar Equine travel mug will be heading your way! No details unless we don’t get any close guesses - then I’ll give you some breadcrumbs 😈
(Please no guessing if you were involved in this case in anyway!)
HEALTH ALERT!
The emergency line has already been a bit busy this evening with calls about colic. With all of this weather coming in, it would not be a bad idea to offer extra electrolytes to your friends this evening, and throughout the weekend. Anything you can do to encourage water intake is helpful.
☑️ ensure water troughs do not freeze
☑️ add warm water to grain rations
☑️ add electrolytes to feed or offer water buffet (bucket of plain water, bucket of water with 2 ounces of table salt, bucket of water with 2 ounces of baking soda)
Tis the season for colic, especially impaction colic. Do your part to help your horses through these shifting weather patterns!
✨ Acupuncture ✨
This therapy really needs no introduction. The benefits are innumerable. The reaction you see in the video above is extremely common and most horses thoroughly enjoy this process.
The licking, chewing and yawning you see here is typical of a “release” and means the horse is fully relaxed and enjoying a nice endorphin (happy hormone) response.
We’re so happy you enjoyed yourself Candy ❤️

The office will be closed December 25th and 26th, but as always Emergency coverage is available.
Name that procedure!
Any ideas why we need this information?

👁️ Debriding Corneal Ulcers 👁️When a corneal ulcer is found, oftentimes if it’s not healing in an appropriate amount of time, we will debride it. Debriding is the act of using a tool (in this example, a dry sterile QTip, but sometimes a diamond burr or scalpel edge) to scrape away dead, non healing corneal tissue. This allows the eye to recognize the lesion and initiate the healing process. This horse is sedated and has corneal numbing drops. And she’s wonderfully behaved ❤️ #horsevet #equinevet #horsesofinstagram #ilovemyjob #equineophthomology #aaep
