It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

Just to give everyone ample notice: the office will be closed on Christmas Eve through the 26th. Limited availability for appointments on the 27th. We will also be closed on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day!

We know we look forward to this time of the year to recharge with our families before starting the new year, we hope you get to find some peace and happiness this holiday season as well!

This mash can be fed year round but has been very helpful in increasing water intake! And most horses LOVE it! 😍

November Journal Club 📓

Last month, practice manager and saddle fitter Louise presented:

“Feel the Force” - Prevalence of Subjectively Assessed Saddle Fit Problems in Swiss Riding Horses and their Association with Saddle Pressure Measurements and Back Pain (Dittmann et al, 2021)

🔴Main Takeaways🔴

🔺An incorrectly fitted saddle can:
❌ cause pain/discomfort
❌impair muscle development
❌impede movement

🔺Saddle fitters consider the symmetry, filling material, gullet width, waist/twists, balance, and more when assessing saddles!

🔺25% of saddles within this study had one fitting issue while another 65% of saddles had more than one fitting issue!

The long awaited muzzle post!!! 🎉

Given the forecast shows lows overnight in the 20s for the next week, it is safe to take off those muzzles!!!

One disclaimer though: if the days get warm again (55+) we would strongly recommend putting muzzles back on your metabolic-type horses.

Thanksgiving Holiday Hours 🦃

Our office is open today but will be closed for the remainder of this week. Emergency services will still be available. Many thanks for allowing our team to care for your horses. 🧡

Love these reminders! We really appreciate emergency prevention as much as possible especially on holidays!!

As we enter Thanksgiving week in the US, many of your vets will be out of town or spending much needed time with their families.

It’s times like these that horse owners need to practice preventative caregiving.

During this holiday time, as an emergency only vet, I recommend the following:

- Don’t deworm your horse right now.

- Don’t start a new feed right now.

- Don’t get a new round bale of coastal hay right now if you’ve let the last one go to dust (give small amounts at a time or mix with a stemmy hay until they’ve had their fill, then give the round bale).

- Don’t change schedules.

- Don’t vaccinate your horse right now, especially if you have a known reactor.

- Don’t be in a rush and fail to soak your feed for long enough (choke risk) - especially if you’re late to feed due to holiday errands/get togethers.

- If you have visitors, limit treats. Ensure gates are closed. Make sure feed doors and bins locked.

There is already a shortage of equine vets - and the few we do have will likely be out of town or trying to enjoy the holiday.

Let’s all have a very Happy Thanksgiving. And let’s let our vets stay home with family!

❤️‍🩹 Transformation Tuesday ❤️‍🩹

Poor Perri sustained a radial fracture to his right leg in May of this year. The fracture was not as apparent on initial radiographs and is a prime example of why we recommend repeating radiographs after sustaining a wound/traumatic injury in many cases.

With the help of his diligent caretakers and a few bottles of trazadone, this guy has remained quiet enough to prevent displacing the fracture and allowing his body to heal by generating a callus over the break. He has even started slowly returning to work!

😁 Smile, it’s Monday! 😁

Shake has the sweetest smile after removal of his incisors due to Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resporption and Hypercementosis, also know as EOTRH. This condition can be quite painful and horses typically have a better quality of life once the affected teeth are removed!
