☀️As the weather heats up, be mindful of your pet’s paws when walking on asphalt. A simple test to see if the asphalt is too hot: set your hand on the asphalt for 7 seconds - if you can’t keep it there comfortably, it’s too hot for your pet. To make sure your pets still get to exercise try early morning walks, grassy areas, or pet shoes to keep your furry friend comfortable and safe.

📣We are very excited to introduce the newest member to the EasTex Veterinary Team!

Dr. Cheryl Armstrong holds a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine and a Bachelor's in Animal Science from Texas A&M University. Originally from East Texas, Cheryl graduated from Carthage High School before pursuing her academic journey. Alongside her professional pursuits, Cheryl is eagerly anticipating the arrival of her first child with her husband, Ranzy Armstrong. Their family includes three adopted pets: two black lab mixes, Beast and Bandit, and a cat named Marti, each with their own unique personalities. Cheryl finds balance between her love for outdoor activities, such as hiking and camping, and the occasional Netflix binge session for relaxation.

Please help us in welcoming Dr. Armstrong to the EasTex Vet Family; we are so glad that you are here! 👏 🎊 🙌

❌A common myth is that pets on heartworm prevention don’t need to be tested for heartworms.

Heartworms are spread through mosquitos and if your pet is not protected, they can live in their heart and lungs if bitten by an infected mosquito. Even while your pets are on prevention, we recommend to test yearly for heartworms. Sometimes our pets will rub off or spit out their preventative medication, leaving them open to infection.

Give us a call or text to schedule your pet’s heartworm test. We also have it included in our annual bundle which includes a veterinarian exam, a f***l exam, heartworm test, nail trim, core vaccines, and a rabies vaccine.

Here is a great graphic from AAEP about what horses should be consuming for optimal nutrition.

If you believe that horses need grain in their diet to meet their nutritional needs, you are not alone. However, horses should get most of their nutrients from a good quality forage source such as grass, hay, hay pellets, or a complete feed.

Horses generally eat between 1.5-2% of their body weight each day, so an average size 1,000 lbs horse should eat 15- 20 lbs of hay daily. To help fill any nutrient gaps such as essential vitamins or minerals, a ration balancer may be beneficial. Depending on breed, body condition, and exercise level, concentrates may be added in to provide additional energy but are often not needed.

When deciding on what to feed your horse, it is best to invest in high quality forages as the foundation of your feeding plan. Give us a call to make an appointment to consult with our vets about changes in your horses diet, and remember that any changes should be made gradually over time to avoid GI upset.
