Meet Kashi, the brave spokes-kitty for FIP! 🐾 When his journey started back in October, Kashi was in terrible shape—sneezing, lethargic, barely eating, and weighing only 3kg. His diagnosis with FIP felt overwhelming, but his mom, Amelia, refused to give up.

With help from Dr. Listman and the Viking Veterinary team, Kashi started treatment immediately after the life-saving medicine arrived. The transformation was incredible! His energy returned, his appetite improved, and his red blood cell count normalized in just a few days. Today, Kashi has doubled his weight to a healthy 5kg (11lbs), has a glossy coat, and is living his best life with more energy than the kittens in his home!

FIP treatment isn’t just life-saving—it’s life-changing. Thank you, Amelia, for sharing Kashi’s story of resilience and love!

Though Dr. Paul's 2024 journey started away from Viking, he still has an incredible case to share that truly showcases his skills and success as a doctor.

Dr. Paul's case is one that stands out as both a significant challenge and a rewarding success.
He had the opportunity to assist a severely compromised Chihuahua in Northern California who was suffering from heatstroke. Upon arrival, the dog had a body temperature of 107.5°F and was laterally recumbent and seizuring. Cooling measures were put into place, and the most effective treatment was the administration of cooled IV fluids.

Thanks to the swift and coordinated efforts of the medical team, the intervention was successful. The dog was able to return home the following day!! It was an incredibly satisfying moment for him and a reminder of how impactful our work can be for both the patients we care for and the families we serve.

Our January Staff Spotlight goes to none other than our amazing General Practice Technician Sophia!
A message from Sophia -

“Hello, my name is Sophia! I’ve been a Veterinary assistant since June 2024. I love learning new things every day in my job and growing in my skills so I can give the best patient care. I live on a small farm with my family. We have several cows, two collies and a geriatric spaniel/retriever named Matilda. Outside of work you will find me spending time (sometimes sprawled in the mud) with a 2 year old mustang filly I adopted with a friend. I also enjoy ice-skating, volleyball, hiking, plotting the next thing to cross off my bucket list, or just curling up with a good book and a cup of tea.”

Sophia is an amazing asset to our team and we love the positive attitude she comes in with everyday!

Dr. Smith and Dr. Jensen both had the same case come to mind for 2024.

Crown was a patient who presented with severe injuries on a night shift, who was found under his owner's deck after what appeared to be a traumatic incident. His hind legs and inguinal area had massive lacerations. Fly larvae were also found in the wounds, indicating they were at least 24 hours old. At first, we weren’t sure if we’d be able to save his leg. However, after a thorough discussion with the owner regarding the perseverance that was about to come to save the leg, they decided to pursue open wound management.
Crown proved to be a champion throughout the process, and our doctors were able to practice and expand their skills with tie-over bandages and open wound management.

While Dr. Jensen saw Crown on intake, he wants to emphasize that the credit for his recovery truly belongs to all of the team. Every single person with Viking played a part in providing care and was an invaluable experience for us all.

We had the privilege of witnessing the entire process of wound healing from start to finish, and it was an incredible learning experience.

Dr. Listman's win for 2024:

The win that stands out for Dr. Listman was a linear foreign body surgery. The patient presented with vomiting, anorexia and lethargy. With quick recognition and diagnosis, Dr. Listman was able to save this patient before he perforated and decompensated.

This was Dr. Listman's first linear foreign body surgery, which required a gastrotomy and three enterotomies to successfully remove the entire foreign body (rope/fabric) without causing harm to the healthy tissues. It was a complex and challenging case, but with everyone’s support and teamwork, we were able to achieve a positive outcome.

This case was a great demonstration of his growth and solidifying his confidence in tackling more advanced surgeries.

Looking forward to even more successes in 2025!

Meet Maple, the fashion icon! She is a 3-year-old Cocker Spaniel who had a run-in with a dangerous snack—chocolate-covered raisins, a double no-no for dogs! When she arrived, our team acted quickly, inducing vomiting to help remove the toxic treats. Maple’s elevated heart rate and rising temperature meant she needed hospitalization and close monitoring. After 12 hours of care, an anti-nausea injection, and improved vital signs, Maple was cleared to go home and is now feeling much better!

Let Maple’s story serve as a reminder: both raisins and chocolate are toxic to dogs. If your pet gets into them, seek veterinary care immediately. Quick action can make all the difference!

Dr. Meloche's Wins:

This year, Dr. Meloche had 2 cases that stood out as major milestones in her career.
Her first case in Idaho Falls doing a relief shift, involved a patient presenting with severe acute lethargy and melena (dark blood in the stools). Upon initial evaluation, the PCV was 6% (a very low red blood cell count), and an ultrasound revealed an intussusception (where the intestines telescope in on themselves). After stabilizing the patient with a blood transfusion, she and her team of skilled technicians proceeded with emergency exploratory surgery at 4 am. During the procedure, a small mass was discovered within the intussusception and a resection and anastomosis (RNA) was performed.
It turned out to be an interesting case, and she is grateful for the quick thinking and collaboration that made this all possible.
Her second major milestone was diagnosing a linear foreign body in a cat that ate a string, WITHOUT performing an X-ray!!! She found the culprit under the tongue!

Looking forward to more wins like this in 2025!

Presenting the 2024 Doctor Wins! 🏆 Highlighting the cases that made a lasting impression on the VVH Nampa Veterinarians this year.

Dr. Lonchar's win:

This year, Dr. Lonchar was able to save Frank the Tank, a case that truly tested our skills, teamwork, and perseverance.
It all started with a coyote attack that left Frank hemorrhaging on entry to our hospital. Shortly after arrival, he went into respiratory arrest. Thanks to swift action, Dr. Lonchar and her team of skilled technicians were able to stabilize him, and bring him back.
Having blood products readily available, he was given a transfusion as he was rolled into the operating room. After 2-3 hours of surgery to repair severe injuries to both sides of his neck, including a severed jugular, Frank made it through and continued to fight.
Seeing Frank make it through this traumatic event and thrive after such a severe injury really underscores the power of our collective effort and commitment to the work we do.
