No need to use shock to teach your dogs to avoid rattle snakes...
Besides, you never know what they will actually associate the shock with... I once had a client dog who was very well socialized Golden Retriever who travelled much with her mom and was an easy going Therapy Dog at a local hospital. After having undergone Rattle Snake Training with shock in the parking lot of a local hardware store, the dog began shaking, salivating and refused to get out of the car onto Parking Lot surfaces, all of them, and developed very life altering fear & anxiety behaviors that took a couple of years of extensive desensitization training and veterinary medicine support. The previously easy going dog never fully rehabilitated to her easy going self.
Remember...WE DO NOT CONTROL what association the dog makes during training. You will never develop FEAR/ANXIETY/AGGRESSION by providing pleasant & fun things your dog loves during training but you very well might develop unwanted side effects when applying pressure, pain or coercion.
Thank you to the incomparable for creating this infographic for The Proficient Pup! There is a choice in how to train a dog to move away from a rattlesnake or any other potentially dangerous situation. One arguably causes irreperable harm to dogs and snakes, and the other builds trust and confidence in both dogs and humans! Which would you prefer to choose, if you could?
