We are equipped to assist you with routine preventive care for young, healthy pets; early detection and treatment of disease as your pet ages; and complete medical and surgical care as necessary during his or her lifetime. We have the ability to manage your pet’s care here at our facility and can solve most ailments in-house which saves time, and most importantly, it can save your pet’s life. 🚨 Important Update: Leptospirosis Now a Core Vaccine for ALL Dogs
The 2022 AAHA Canine Vaccination Guidelines have been updated to classify the leptospirosis vaccine as CORE for all dogs starting at 12 weeks of age – regardless of lifestyle, location, or breed.
Why the change?
🌆 ALL dogs are at risk—urban, suburban, and rural.
⚠️ Potentially fatal, even with treatment.
🔄 Zoonotic—it can spread from pets to humans.
🏢 Dogs in daycare and kennels also face exposure risks.

🌞🐾 Beat the heat with pet-friendly walks! As temperatures rise, it's crucial to keep our furry friends safe and comfortable. Let's chat about smart tips for staying cool while enjoying quality time outdoors with our beloved pets.

🚫 How to Avoid Burns?

- Do the 7 second test: before walking--press your back of your hand to the pavement, if you can't hold it for a full 7 seconds it is too hot to walk!
- Walk your pet on grass or soil
- Opt for morning or evening walks before temperatures peak
- Avoid tethering on hot pavement, in direct sunlight, or in the back of trucks where the metal surface can burn

🐾 Symptoms of burns
- The affected area is reddened and swollen (1st degree)
- Clear blisters are visible (2nd degree)
- The skin is charred (3rd degree)

Pets with pad burns will typically limp or flat out refuse to walk and it takes time after the burn for the lesions to develop!

🔥 How to treat burnt paws?

🩺 Consult a vet as soon as possible! Care will usually involve supportive care including pain medication and cleaning and dressing wounds, plus an Elizabethan collar to suppress any licking.

In the meantime...

💧 Cool the affected paws under slow running water (the water should not be ice-cold).
🩹 Protect it with a clean sock.

Amelia has been by her mom's side since she was just 10 weeks old, training to be a service dog 🐕. She's making waves at Pacific Union College, where she works not only as a service dog but also as a cashier and mascot! Let's give her a warm welcome! 💖🐾

Continuing with Heartworm awareness month, this week we will go over prevention! ❌❤️ While there are numerous heartworm preventions available, we are going to go over what we offer here at Alley Cat! 😸 - Heartguard- Oral prevention given monthly to clear out any accumulated “baby heartworm” (if not given every month it can allow the heartworms to mature) - ProHeart 6 or 12- Injectable prevention that works during the full 6-12 months at preventing heartworm disease (Both prescribed by a veterinarian🩺) 🤔What does prevention look like? 🤔 - Puppies 6 weeks and older can start Heartguard and get one chew every month - Get tested for heartworms at 8 months old. A heartworm test is a small blood test 🩸 done yearly to ensure there are no heartworms present before taking a preventative. - After your pet is at their full-grown weight (usually at 1 year old), they can switch to ProHeart!
